With all that low water here is an alternative way to catch some Salmon!

Can you do this in the lower fly zone?

The Omega of Centerpinning....

I call it the...

Double whammy, skirted tubes, rubbered leg, spinner winner, crazy egged bad az Super Fly!

It's a sure thing with strips of squid and smelt !

Just bounce this Beatch off the bottom!

And for those of you who want to get back to basics--- old school if you will, just try one of these.

Do centerpinners have a float that'll keep this up off the bottom?

There was no one around except a couple of our lodging guests. Apparently yesterday a bunch of salmon moved upstream from the lower end of the river and currently right now at 4:34 pm there are some salmon out behind our shop. The ones from this morning have moved upstream. It's a very hot day today in Pulaski,

NY and the water temperature is in the 70's. Anyone who does hook a salmon and plays it, unfortunately that salmon will die due to the warm water temperature. We have been seeing salmon floating downstream which is sad.

Kings, in very good numbers, continue to move into the DSR today. Fishing pressure is very light.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 70 at 7 a.m..

Word has it that there are a lot of fish coming up from the Douglaston Salmon Run and holding in the Black Hole are up through the Ball Park.

Many hook ups.

Town Pool, Eye of The Needle are all seeing action.

I don't keep any fish that I catch, it is truly a sport and enjoyment for me. Due to the low water and elevated water temperatures, anything that you hook into will surely expire.

If you fish for salmon for consumption, this weekend should be a good time to get up there before the heavy crowds arrive and get into a salmon or two.

I always enjoyed fishing the Eye of the Needle in the white water durning a salmon run.. they tend to hold there under cover.

You can bet the Town Pool will be the Town Zoo.. Always enjoyable to stand on the bridge and take it all in.

Douglaston Salmon Run 9/8/07)

A good day with most everyone having action. Fishing pressure was light.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 77.

The Yankee Fly Shop Report 9.8.07
They said it was so "Hot" where they were fishing that it was unbelievable. Reggie said, "Dawn, every cast!" So, there you have it. We know where it's "Hot" and for those of you who are not here right now, sorry. Please come see us at the shop and we'll tell you where to find 'em! (tell Dawn AK Skim sent you) Most people I've spoke to today in the shop although, not many because they're all out fishing, have told me that they're happy with the conditions and the low water is not an issue for them. Matter of fact, it's GREAT for them. They can see the salmon plain as day.

In an email this morning Dale Braue writes: "Dawn, I got to go up and do some fishing today (9-8-07). To say the least, it was incredible! 18 hookups and 14 fish landed. 2 were big browns; each over 10 lbs. The low water doesn't seem to bother the fish that much, but it takes a while to revive them. Here's proof that you're not lying!!"

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
On Sunday we finally got some rain, nothing measurable but it stayed cloudy and the temperature cooled down. The fishing pressure continues to be lite which is normal for this time of year and the majority of action continues to be in the lower end of the river. With the low water conditions and warm water temperature, the fish have been slow moving through the lower end of the river. On Sunday the Douglaston Salmon Run reported a fair day with approximately 50 kings landed under lite fishing pressure. The anglers who are here understand it's still early but they wanted to get an early trip in before things get crowded.

The weather the rest of the week at this point doesn't look to promising.
There is always hope of a good rain storm coming in next weekend.

The start of the salmon – steelhead season is time to take stock of your equipment.
<O:p</O:p
Check this site for reports from your fellow angles that have made the trip up there recently, reports from the local fly shops, and guides in addition to the weather and water level reports.
<O:p</O:p
Also you should consider making a travel list since many of us travel more than two hours to get to the river. My recent trip to Pulaski I forgot an item that would have been nice to have along. So make a list, starting with clothing, it will all be weather dependent, however, you need to take heed, it is easier to take off warm clothing to become comfortable, than not having additional clothing to keep yourself warm and wart off hypothermia. Clothing should be layered with fleece as the major staple of your clothing selection, color should blend into the surrounding conditions are the season progresses and the fish become more skittish.
<O:p</O:p
Polaroid sun glasses now you season veterans maybe wondering this was difficult, other than the end of August and September when do you ever get to see the sun in Pulaski? Until recently I never saw any lawns other than brown up there. But it will reduce the glare of the water surface allowing you to see the bottom. Seriously, also may keep that errant fly from injuring your eye.
<O:p</O:p
  • Rods and reels ready
    • Last time the backing was replaced? How do you have your backing on the reel, loose and easy?
      • Fighting a fish that makes a good run taking you down to your backing, when you wind it back in under pressure the line under pressure is now digging into the loose raps. Fine if that is the end of the fight, if the fish makes a second run and the line follows the fish going out is fine until the backing comes to the point where the tightly rapped line meets the loose rap and it binds. Line becomes taught and the fish is off… Install the backing on your reel as tightly as possible to prevent any problems when you do have a fish on.
<O:p</O:p
  • Fishing the <ST1:pSalmon River</ST1:p, remember you are fishing a river that part of the make up of the bottom is shale. Sharp shale that will provide many of an opportunity foe a sharp piece of rock to free that fish. Choose a backing that has very good abrasion characteristics for the bottom.
    • Last time you physically inspected the entire length of your fly line
    • If you have multiple tippets, when was the last time they were laid out and inspected
  • Leaders and tippets right for the conditions
    • Have extra and different strengths
    • Better sitting at home reading the posts on this web site than to be sitting stream side making a leader.
  • Topic of flies and having flies for the season… I am not one to coach anyone on tying flies. I travel to a trout stream with literally thousands upon thousands, although I have calmed down for salmon – steelhead season with roughly 3-4 thousand ready. There is something for getting up at 0330 every morning.
  • Check hooks for sharpness if previously used. The bottom is tough on hooks and after snagging or spending time bouncing along the bottom it will become dull. A hook file is an absolute must. Check one of my previous threads on the topic.
  • Lastly, plan your trip around the Rt. 81 construction. No one likes to sit in traffic for an hour or so when you know you should be on the river.
<O:p</O:p<O:p</O:p<O:p</O:p

I went to the Finger Lakes last week and did the western detour (Rte 6 to Rte 11) on the way up and the Eastern one (Rte 171 to Rte 6) on the way back. The Rte 6 to Rte 11 one worked better for me and had basically no traffic. I didn't like going through Carbondale, but the rest of the trip was OK on the Eastern side. The slowest point on Rte 6 west is through Clark's Summit, which isn't that bad. The one thing I like about Rte 11 is that coming from the North you can jump off 81 from New Milford PA to Cortland (or even higher) depending on conditions.

The detours took me by the two great RR bridges of the area, the Tunkhannock Viaduct over Rte 11 in Nicholson, PA (the most concrete in a bridge ever) and the Starucca Viaduct (an 1840's giant stone arch viaduct) a few minutes east of Rte 171 in Lanesboro, PA.

And for that reason alone, make sure you wear boots with good traction and/or cleats as conditions call for. It is very easy to slip or lose your footing. The river has claimed lives in the past.

You mean this viaduct? Back in June, a search for a new pickup truck for my boyfriend took us to Hop Bottom, PA (outside Nicholson) and I stopped and took a few pics. Yes, there really is a used car lot in Hop Bottom. On a dirt road, even.

Viaduct-1.jpg

That's the Tunkhannock Viaduct - you can't even see the whole thing from the picture. It really dominates the whole village of Nicholson.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#ffffff>Yankee Fly Shop; The Fishing Is Great, The Catching Is So-So</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2>
<TABLE width="98%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>
9_10_07thumb-1.jpg

This is going to be my new phrase....."The fishing is great however the catching is so-so". What I mean by this is really just so. The fishing is always great here on the Salmon River. It's the catching that may be the question. It's up to the angler and if you are lucky, great. If you are good at fishing, great. If you whine and cry a lot, then not so great. If you have to step on thousands of fish in a hole that's 5'X5' then not so great. There's so many variables. Every year we hear thousands of people talk about their experiences regarding the Salmon River. Every year we get thousands of calls and emails asking us when's the best time to come. While we pride ourselves on honest, no B.S. reports, you really need to keep one thing in mind and that's this question: "What kind of angler are you?" For me, I can honestly tell you that I'm a fair weathered angler. My husband, John Rucando, is not. He can and will fish for days without even getting a strike and then go back at it and be rewarded with a trophy fish. Me, I want action all the time. When it's hot, let me know. When it's slow I'm going to take a nap. Several times I would go out fishing with John in the boat for musky or tarpon or whatever it was that we were fishing for and when the action was slow I would get board and take a nap. As soon as John would get one on and wake me up I'd be at it for about another hour and then lay down again. That's me, fair weathered. Don't get me wrong, I love fishing, it's just that I personally don't have the drive that my husband does. So when you call us, let us know if you're like me or if you're like my husband John. This will give us a better idea about who we're giving our report to. As for now, this kid (didn't get his name) caught his first Chinook (King) Salmon today on the Salmon River and he's really proud. While it was a slow day around Pulaski NY today and it being a Monday, what we did hear was that it was good for some but not so good for others. I can tell you that salmon keep coming into the Salmon River NY on a daily basis. The locals are taking advantage of it and some anglers are driving long distances to fish now because they know that soon it will be shoulder to shoulder. The low water level has not affected the salmon from coming in. Keep in mind, they don't ALL come in at the same time. These salmon are early and there will be more. Thousands more. They will continue to come in until November. Last season we saw fresh King Salmon coming into the Salmon River with eggs still tight in their skein around late November.

Hope you enjoyed the story and report, fish on, fish off!

Salmon movement was at a minimum today. Fishing pressure was light.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 66.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
Please check the waterline for the latest update and continue to do the rain dance. On Tuesday we did get some scattered rain showers, nothing major, but the little we did get is greatly appreciated. Most of the anglers we spoke with reported that the action was slow and were optimistic that things will improve. We've had some cooler weather over the last few days which has helped lower the water temperature. With the low water conditions the fish that are around have been slow moving upstream and the majority of action continues to be in the lower end of the river.

It's POURING cats and dogs outside right now and even lightening. So, here's the rain you're looking for folks.......flooding down the streets of Pulaski, New York as I'm typing. I'm buring the midnite oil with an oncoming cold thanks to the Pulaski Daycare Center and all the little germ bags over there. Yeah, just put Isla in daycare last week and now we're all sick! Back to my report......it was fair today. Around 2 pm there were a bunch of Kings and brown trout out back in our pool. The leg lizzards were trying but didn't see the pod sitting in the middle. My husband John pointed them out to shop customers looking for a place to fish and as soon as he did, they all said, "Wow, look at all those fish sitting right there!!!" Needless to say, the leg lizzards heard and started bombing their lines away. You can figure out the rest from there. Guide Mike took his mother and father out fly fishing. They had a good time. It wasn't "hot" for them where they were but they each caught a King Salmon. His dad caught a bright silver one and his mom caught a green ugly one. Other than that, the fishing is good and it's only going to get better. The night time mouth of the Salmon River fishing is picking up as the Kings are all staging out there. More and more daily. Friends were out on Lake Ontario today and they said it was slow for them and as soon as they pulled into the Lighthouse Marina their fish finder went "beep, beep, beep"....off the wall with salmon staging underneath. That's my report. Come in and see us as things change from minute to minute around here.

George O'Brien's report for Sept.11th
Last year on this date we had the awesome pleasure of fishing to 3-4 thousand Coho's! Today was just the opposite! Nary a few was seen by my 3 guests, Tom Fischer being the only one of his 3 man group to land a fish !By 11am we decided to call it a morning and the guy's would come back out later in the afternoon! We did get some MUCH NEEDED rain this afternoon in the form of 2 good soakings! Maybe this will spur some fish to run the lower part of the river tomorrow? Only time will tell.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Every night I have been chanting, so tonight you all should join me in chanting this Navajo rain chant. I have translated it into English for those pale faces that need it.

Far as man can see,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

From the Rain-Mount,
Rain-Mount far away,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

O'er the corn,
O'er the corn, tall corn,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

'Mid the lightnings,
'Mid the lightnings zigzag,
'Mid the lightnings flashing,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

'Mid the swallows,
'Mid the swallows blue,
Chirping glad together,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

Through the pollen,
Through the pollen blest,
All in pollen hidden,
Comes the rain,
Comes the rain with me.

I did have time to ask him about the opening day of LFZ and he informed me that it is DOUBTFUL they will open it this Sat due to the lack of water. He told me that they are already making preparations of bringing in additional personnel to stand at all access points and inform the public. He doesn't think there will be time for a public message because they will not be able to determine the closing until Friday at midnight when they decide to release water or not. (With the res. level a release is extremely doubtful too).
We got in a bit of a heated discussion when I told him I thought that was stupid, he was taken back a bit and said "We are in an emergency situation here, those fish will be sitting ducks".
"But they are all stocked fish anyway, who cares, stock more smolt this year" I replied.
"Come with me," he said "I need to run you license from my truck to verify if it is a counterfeit" :D I guess my mouth has a tendency to run like the fabled Salmon this year.

On a not so funny note.... there isn't much to report. The fish that are in the River are riddled with hooks, lines and a heard of anglers chasing them up and down the river.

The run HAS NOT BEGUN.

I know all the local business all depend on the $$$ we all bring to the area and some may be a little anxious to get it started by posting that fish are being caught.....and some numbers have entered the river. Well if some is 12 and being caught means deliberate lining.... then the river is on fire.

Douglaston Salmon Run Report 9/13/07

A quieter day, just a trickle of Kings and light fishing pressure.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 66.

Water release is 100 CFS until 11:59 PM Friday, September 14, 2007 when they will reassess.

Lower Fly Fishing Zone Closure

THE LOWER FLYFISHING AREA WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL OCTOBER 15TH, 2007.

Due to drought conditions the fall Salmon River base flows of 335cfs have been reduced to 100cfs. The Lower Flyfishing Area is a staging area for fish as they prepare to enter the NYSDEC Salmon River Hatchery. We need to ensure that adequate numbers of fish will enter the hatchery to meet egg quotas. Also the low flow and warm water situation that we are presently encountering could result in substantial mortality of caught and released fish. Therefore under Section 10.2[g] NYCRR which designates special regulations for the Catch & Release Flyfishing Only Areas on the Salmon River, the Lower Flyfishing Area from the County Route 52 Bridge upstream to the marked boundary at Beaverdam Brook will be closed until Monday October 15th, 2007.

Hey AK,
Where are you getting the info on the LFZ closure. I've been hearing about it everywhere but can't find any documented info on it.

George O'Brien's Salmon River Fishing Report 13SEP07

Bit of early Salmon fishing. Today was over all a slow day with just enough fish movement to keep us interested! The report's from a couple of Guide's are that there are a ton of fish stacking up at the lake's breakwater just waiting for Mother Nature to "Ring the Bell" Even with the low water (remember 2002 ?) these fish will run the river whenever that "urge" becomes too great! Water temps are still below normal by about 10 degrees-62.5 this morning.

Even the WX forcast doesn't look promising till mid week.

There are people out there who are not doing their fair share of the Rain Chanting...

Douglaston Salmon Run's Report for 9/15/07

A late day push of Cohos saved the day for the persistent angler.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 64.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
Saturday scattered showers moved across the area, it was not enough to impact the water level, but what we got was greatly appreciated. Despite the difficult conditions, anglers we've spoken with are still glad to be here and have done a great job at keeping a positive attitude given the conditions. As of recently we've had some cooler weather which has helped lower the water temperature. With the low water conditions the fish that are around have been spooky and slow moving upstream while the majority of action continues to be in the lower end of the river.

The Underground radar was showing a large band of rain passing through the area before midnight. Every little bit will help as noted in the DSR report where the water temperature had dropped 2 degrees.
