Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Rite Bobbins, worth the price?

A Polinger

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I have been looking at the Rite Bobbins but the question that keeps hitting me is it worth the price? Does anyone use them and if so why or why not? $21+ is a lot for a bobbin.

Thanks,
AP

Not for nothing, 21 bucks for something you keep is awesome in fly fishing. A lot of us will blow 20 bucks giving flys to the trees in a day or 12 bucks for Fluro tippet. Seems like a good value and an awesome design.

I book marked it for when I get my tying station set up this winter.

I never tried the Rite bobbin but I use Tiemco Ceramic Bobbins that cost $21,95 a piece. I have 8 of them. A good bobbin is one that is threaded, tyes flies and you never think about it again until thread run out and a new spool has to be added. Honestly a good ceramic bobbin like this is worth the price to me.

I don't tie too many flies with those delicate silk floss materials, so I personally don't understand, nor NEED a ceramic bobbin. I actually have one, and use it for keeping wire spooled.

I want a rite bobbin, but mainly as an experiment, i have heard they are damn strong per kelly galloup, and would like one for gx2 thread, where I won't bend the bobbin when spinning deer hair, etc.

I currently buy 4-5 dollar bobbins, and have tied just fine with them. I have about 6 bobbins, I want about 60 more. have every color and type of thread spooled ready to go is a great time saver.

Sorry for this but bobbins are not for floss. Ceramic was used and still is due to the older metal bobbins would get a bur and start to cut the thread. Honestly most good tyers use there hands to apply rayon floss and almost all us Salmon tyers use silk gloves when working with true silk floss. I tyed quite a few flies with Deer hair and use a metal around ceramic bobbin that is really strong and efficient. Far as Kelly Gallup his all metal bobbin is a gimmick to try and sale a product. Sorry for the rant but honestly when I look at it I can tye better with my bare hands without a bobbin better than most people that use them. They are a tool used for shaping heads and holding thread.

I use a bobbin.

Yep, I sure do.

You can't possibly be talking about me, can you, Andy B?

While I admit you may tie better than yours truly, I doubt you could without your special bobbin.

I've heard of rod collectors...

I've heard of reel collectors...

But a bobbin collector?

You really need 60 bobbins?

well i have a few bobbins and it doesnt matter to me what one i use its a preference tools dont make you a better tyer just makes it easier to achieve your goals with them..... i believe when i started tying one year ago ill quote a number of members " keep it simple and less is more" if your tying for your self you dont need speed of rotary vise a standard vise is all you need....

now to get back the the 21 dollar bobbin go for it whats the worst thing that happens you dont like it and dont use it.. atleast it will allways be there... im sure we all have stuff we bought because it looks cool... and never use it

okay, well non archaic jackasses use bobbins for floss. I use them for embroidery floss when doing woven bodies per davy wotton's tip, and i use them for tying streamer bodies etc with pearsall's silk, alec jackson's insert name here floss because I'm not Prince and don't own purple silk gloves.

HeadlessVerseman...

What can I say...

You've just written a classic post to NEFF...

Your use of the words "non archaic jackasses" was, to say the least, a skillful and artistic way to insult Andy B, who presumably is an "archaic jackass."

Such artful use of words from you, I can only imagine the skill with which you wield the mighty Bobbin!

It also qualifies you for a titled position in the NEFF Brain Trust.

Perhaps you could suggest an appropriate title for yourself?

For now, I'll stick with "HeadlessVerseman, Non Archaic Jackass," until you come up with something better...
