Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

PETA to Vermont. Ban fishing.

Loved the Vermont's Commissioner's reply, priceless:

“Picking on a program that brings families together, teaches kids how to fish and nurtures an appreciation for our aquatic resources is a poor vehicle for a political stunt, especially in a place like Vermont,” the commissioner wrote in an email Monday evening to the Burlington Free Press. “Perhaps the folks at PETA would like to join us for some angling and learn how to enjoy the wonder of Vermont’s fantastic fisheries.”

Invite PETA fishing:)

Vermont is the only state that I have ever fished where I was hassled by PETA types while trout fishing. It was way back in the late 70s, but I still remember it clearly. Mad River in the Warren area near a swimming hole, fishing with my kid brother. I just laughed at them and kept fishing.

Vermont is full of hippies. You'd think there's be enough ganja and Rock and Roll to keep them entertained up there. They don't put up with that shit in NH. But in NH they also laugh people who think wild brook trout are worth respecting.

I did leave out the part where those older teens wandered downstream, filled a bong with river water, fired up, got chased off by the one adjacent landowner, and we kept fishing. :)

“Fish have particularly sensitive mouths and lips that they use in much the same way that we use our hands,” she wrote. “Removing a hook often results in painful injuries to a fish’s lips, throat, mouth, and/or face, which can easily become infected. Research shows that fish who are caught and thrown back into the water (‘catch-and-release’ fishing) often die from their injuries, stress, and/or the loss of their protective outer coating.”

Fish have feelings too.

These anti idiots always want to impose human feelings to animals. Ask them how a trout feels when an otter is eating it while it is still alive. Or when a Great Blue heron jams its bill through the back of a 20" trout he can't possibly eat anyway. Morons

Vermont still has a rifle fishing season so good luck hippies.

That is sort of a tone deaf tactic by PETA because most people have fond memories of a grandfather or parent taking them out fishing. They used a more subtle - and successful - approach in Arizona. There PETA used the native fish argument - who doesn't love native fish. That is fine for the mountains where the Gila and Apache trout are struggling to hang on. However, most of the trout fishing is in tailwaters that were once muddy, turbulent and warm and the home to all sorts of specialized cyprinids, like the Colorado River squawfish. Trying to bring them back (at the expense of trout of course) is silly because the environment had a radical change from warm and silt laden to cold and clear. But it sure hurts brown and rainbow trout fishing.

I don't know what she looks like, but someone could show her how to use her mouth like a hand. No teeth though.

OFF TOPIC:
Vermont may have a lot of lefties, but it's is one of the few states in the nation that requires no permit to carry a concealed weapon.....

Incidentally very low crime rate. The low population likely helps, but the potential baddies never know who can shoot back either...

The only state. If you can legally own a gun, you can conceal carry in VT. Not that VT has high crime, but it is odd they are the only state with no permit requirement. More independents than hard core lefties although there are plenty of both.

Not the only state. Alaska has no concealed carry laws either.

Nothing to do with PETA. But on my way home today I saw this on 81 in Scranton. I had to take a picture.
