NJ - Over 70 no license rant

Pete

Trout Hunter
I had a birthday last summer (70).
As I understand it, nor only do I not need a fishing license in New Jersey, but if I try to buy one, they will refuse to sell me one.

What gives with that?

Am I supposed to be some kind of charity case?
I didn't "earn" anything. It's not like being a disabled veteran..... All I did was "not die"....

  • 1. They're making me into some kind of freeloader.

    2. Passers by, will see someone fishing without a license.

    3. My age is none of their business, but....If anyone questions it, I have to stop fishing, come ashore, and not only admit to being an old phart, but be prepared to prove it.

    4. I (and everyone else over 70) don't "count" when NJ gets it's share of the federal excise tax on fishing, hunting and boating equipment.

A free license would solve the excise tax situation, and avoid the inconvenience/embarrassment problem....
BUT
If they want to appease the liberal weenie, "gray power" factions, wouldn't the discounted senior license, and a full priced trout stamp, be a fair compromise?
OR
At least give us the option of paying our way.

So to be clear, if you were given a free lunch, you would be upset because you got one, and feel they should at least give you a receipt for what you ate?

Some folks aren't comfortable with a free lunch. Others expect one (or more). Good for you, Pete. But enjoy the benefits of "old age".

Just look at it this way: the $$ you're saving on a fishing license and trout stamp can now be spent on new waders, and the Red Balls can finally be retired :)

..... enjoy the benefits of "old age"...
Benefit ?
It's an insult, being forced into the "welfare class"....

AND
....... I (and everyone else over 70) don't "count" when NJ gets it's share of the federal excise tax on fishing, hunting and boating equipment.[/list]
Did you look at the group at the Ramapo "Rock Rolling" event?
If you took away the Ramapo College kids, and the greenies from MEVO, and just looked at the fishermen, that was not a young group.

Pictures posted, (here and on GST), of other chapter's meetings, do not portray TU as a youth group...

When NJ applies for it's "share", a lot of us aren't being counted.

If you don't agree that pandering to the seniors is demeaning...
Think about the money being lost !
So to be clear, if you were given a free lunch, you would be upset because you got one, and feel they should at least give you a receipt for what you ate?
Are you under the impression that free lunches exist?

Pete I disagree with the state not issuing a license. Even if you are exempt fro paying for it. You should be able obtain one to keep from being harassed from the game warden.

I think, I won't be able to have an opinion on this until it happens to me.........:)

"My age is none of their business, but....If anyone questions it, I have to stop fishing, come ashore, and not only admit to being an old phart, but be prepared to prove it."

Ask them politely to wade out to where you are...............

sounds like a post Future Fanatic will enjoy chiming in on

They should require a license for everybody even the over 70 crowd. You get to little book of regualtions and know what is currently allowed and what is not. The over 70 crowd should be able to opt to pay or not. They should still have to display the license.

What are you doing in NJ anyway? I thought it was mandatory that you relocate to Florida?
