Nice streamside insect guide

Super Pupa
For all of you out there who have trouble identifying bugs like myself, I recommend picking up one of the Orvis Streamside guides "Trout Stream Insects" by Dick Pobst. It's a nice, small, easy to follow guide that breaks down to lifecycles of certain insects, easter/western hatches and much more. Comes packed with plenty of color photos. For $16 it's not a bad pickup.

Any one know how this compares to Al Caucci's bug ID guide?
Sib,
Al Caucci's streamside bug ID is without doubt the best on the market. He wrote the bible on Hatches, his insect ID STREAMSIDE guide is a tremendous asset to the novice as well as the expert. His studies of insects have changed the thinking of many entomologists.
Its a streamside guide for both the expert and novice fly fisherman and Provides concise information that enables the reader to identify quickly and easily the important mayflies of North America, Streamside. All three stages are described: the nymph, the dun and the spinner. Its a dollar or two less than Pobsts.

Pobsts is a hard cover book and unless you are carrying that with you or taking the insects home (which doesn't help to identify whats hatching at a particular time) you are out of luck streamside.

Its a good book for beginer fly fishers who want to familiarize thermselves with bugs.

A great guide is Hatch Guide for New England Streams by Thomas Ames. Much more detailed than Pobst book, info on flies to represent bugs, and applies to Catskills also. $19.95, which is I think in range of Pobst book. I know that Ramsey Outdoor has it, suspect that most other stores do too.

I have both of the two books you mentioned. The Instant Mayfly Identification Guide by Caucci/Nastasi is much better.
