New to PA Fly Fishing

Thursthouse

Tight Loins
My Buddy and I are planning on going fly fishing in PA for an extended weekend in the spring for trout. We both live in NJ (one in south and one in North) and have very limited experience fishing in PA. We're looking for somewhere off the beaten path - preferably trout streams/rivers (no lakes) that are harder to access. We're planning spending our time hiking/fishing/camping. Any suggestions on where we should be looking? I'm not asking for specific honey holes - just a river/park/forest where we could start our research. Would prefer somewhere on the eastern half of the state but not an absolute requirement.

PM sent. Also I asked about a PA license a while back and the thread was very helpful

when you say spring, what month are you going?

Planning on April/May - would prefer to aviod the crowds and get off the beaten path, but do realize that will be difficult in the spring time. But to be honest, we'd be happier to catch a few less trout and be more remote, then catch a lot more on a popular stocked stream (for this particular trip).

Penns creek, camp at Poe paddy. You can also while there drive to spring creek big fishing and many others. You can be by yourself at Penns and do plenty of hiking while your there. Try to hit the hendricksons.

If you do not want to travel too far I would suggest The Lackawaxen. If you want to travel, go to State College. You can not miss on either destination.

I would think explore a few general areas.
The Poconos are closest. Lackawaxen is a good option on the North end of the Poconos. Dyberry Ck and Shohola Ck (and others) are options off most people's radar in the area. The streams on the North side of the Poconos are less fished than the more famous ones on the South side. Camping at Hickory Run State park and walking into the Lehigh Gorge or trying some of the small streams is another option.

Central, PA (mainly Centre Co around State College) is another fishing destination. Penns Ck has places to walk in and Spring Ck, Fishing Ck, and the Little Juniata are options. Some small brookie streams in the mountains most people pass by on the way to more famous streams. This is a longer drive. I like central PA because it has a good mix of fishing and amenities - you can find good bars and brew pubs there.

To get away from it all Potter Co in North Central PA is one of the wildest spots in PA. Pine Ck canyon is one big draw and there are sections you need to walk in to fish, but there are other streams up there.

We're currently looking at Tiagaghton State Forest and Poe Paddy State Park as TM mentioned - not definites but trying to narrow the search. Both seem to offer both main rivers and small creeks/streams along with camping and solitude.

Ollie, that Savage River will have to checked out at some point to..looks too good to pass up

Back to the research..

We settled on camping in bald eagle state forest along Penns Creek as TM suggested. Seems pretty remote and a lot of options fishing wise. Any other suggestions on tributaries off of Penns Creek to explore? We're going late (may 30th) due to spring gobbler trips planned.

Penns remote LOL. If you're going to fish Penns then fish Spring Creek too. End of May will bring the Green Drake junkies so you will have plenty of company on Penns. Plenty of tribs with fish in them too. If you're looking for less people then go north and fish upper Pine. Much nicer there.

I love NEFF. I know there's been some back and forth lately about a lot of experienced people who have apparently left the site over the years, but you guys help a new guy out so much it's not even funny. Thank you for all the info and the laughs (not only on this thread but all the threads here)

Thurst I wouldnt lose any sleep over what some of these veterans say about NEFF. There was plenty of back and forth back in the day:) it's great to see folks come back and contribute and NEFF is hardly a cesspool. It's a cesspool that's being restored:)

I agree, I have learned a lot here..I have also learned that people take themselves too seriously sometimes....the new back and forth makes you wonder who the "A_holes" really are......and by the way, who told about my pink panties!?!??!:crap:

Let me know your thoughts after you go, I'm looking for a decent halfway meet up spot with a buddy who loves in Rochester

I agree I try to learn as much from the guys here as I can, I have been fishing for over 35 years and I still have much to learn. It can be a humbling sport. Just today I ended a 28 month span without being skunked. I had one take today and that was a fish that wanted to eat my strike indicator. Overall the site has a friendly group of guys now. I still do not see how it became so chaotic. I think some guys were here to bolster their egos at the expense of others, and when they were called out on it. They went berserk and finally left the site. At the end of the day it is only a fly fishing form. If you cant take a joke or some constructive criticism here. You have some issues that should be addressed.

Tom, I just started a streak of being skunked...it started New Year's day......I have been out 4 times total this year, much less than usual due to many reasons, but I have not yet caught a fish in 2014.....I have had fun and learned something on every outing, but no fish...maybe it was the cold winter, or my lack of time on the water, but noo feeesh yet!!!!!

Where are the Hendricksons!!!?????!!!?

Reminds me of a thread I started last year called spring.....had something to do with gluttony....:crap:

Put together a esn style leader last night with the bright colored squiggly pubic hair indicator deal and let me tell ya, that shits no joke:worthy::worthy::worthy:

I tied a bunch a crane fly larvae in different weights to use as my anchor fly and they just went to town on that thing. Holy grail did well too.
