Looking for places to flyfish for trout near Whippany

I just got a flyfishing outfit and I want to try catching some trout with it. Where can I go to catch trout that isn't far away? Can I eat any of the trout around here also?

Your timing is bad. The warm weather has probably ended most trout fishing in NJ until autumn. You'd probably be better off pond fishing for bass and sunfish. Sunfish are a great confidence builder for new fly fishermen, and the occasional bass are a bonus.

For future reference start with the list published by the State Division of Fish and Game, but don't be afraid to explore.

Some of them may contain warm water species.
Also see the list of trout stocked waters and access points: https://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/accesscnty.htm

Here's their list of ponds and lakes that might be more suitable for warm water species now.

What Pete said.

You can try a little warm water fishing for bass and panfish in the Whippany River above Central Park on S. Jefferson Rd. and the Brick Yard ponds (Bee Meadow Park) on Reynolds Ave. And there is always the Passaic River for pike.

All good advice, and when the temps cool by September, the Whippany River and the Rockaway River are both close as is North Branch Raritan and others for trout.

Haha I got a trout a few days ago when I went fishing at big flatbrook. Where is a good spot on the Whippany for trout that you don't mind to tell me? I see that its a pretty big river.
