all right im getting really pissed with these freakin knots does anyone have a good how to tutorial on tying tippet to leader??

i dont know what the hell im doing wrong the knots im tying is the same knot that i have used for two years and havent had any problems... the only think i can think of is that im useing 5x leader with 4x tippet but im throwin shot and big buggers is the 5x to weak to hold the stress of casting i mean im useing 4 bb shot and big weighted wooley buggers to get down in these high waters.... when i get a fish on instantly gone you can feel the fish then it breaks.



i think its time to tying a dry fly and worry about bugger rigs this fall or so im thinking 3x or 4x leader would fix my problem.

Loop your surgeons through 3 times..Will be CLEan AND STRONG...

If tippet is VERY different, tie albright knot...

Just tie blood knots make sure the tag ends are 90 degrees from the main line and opposite each other -- This knot when tied properly will give you 100 percent knot strength --

Surgeons Knot is ok but it will only give 85 percent knot strength

Albright knot is the same knot strength as surgens knot

1st try using spelling and grammer check. Man it hurts to read. 2nd you should not attach a 4x tippet to a 5x leader. 3rd I have tied my own leaders for years with a blood knot tyer and have never had a problem. Its got to be your line KNOT your KNOTS. Never use less than 4x with streamers. You need good short tapers for streamer leaders.

90% of the time I use a blood knot, the other times are shared with surgeons, uni to uni and loop to loops. Orvis has a good animated knot tutorial on their website that I think makes learning knots knot hard at all: Fly Fishing Knots

Agreed, I try not to use anything less than 3-X for streamers. A strong hit from a good rainbow will easily break knots in 4-X since you're fishing the fly on a tight line..

IMHO:
Hook size divided by 4 equals "Normal" tippet size (X),
Hook size divided by 3 equals "light" tippet size (for fussy dry fly conditions).
Fractions- round up or down as desired.

But, to make it easy. If the tippet fits comfortably into the eye of the hook, it's light enough.

TF, Tie either a blood or suregons knot, both very easy to tie. Simms mentioned tie a suregons with three loops he is spot on. I use this knot a lot and never fails. A blood will take an extra minute to tie but I think its stronger. Also If your streamer fishing use 3 or 4x. It's probably breaking b/c the tippet is too light for what your trying to do.

I personally like the blood knot. I use 4 or 5 turns and make sure the mono is well lubricated and you pull it tight evenly. The coils have to be perfect. If not the knot will slip.

Don't overlook the possibility that your tippet is old - if you are like me, the 5X tippet spool you have was bought last spring, and has on and off been in the trunk of your car in the sun - so the knot may be fine, but the tippet may be weakened by age and heat. They tell you to toss your leader material each year and buy new, but personally I can't afford that - but I do get new 5X and 6X each year. Another thought - if you are tying on a flourocarbon tippet to a nylon leader, the two materials don't always work so well together - have been told that you should use a diffeerent knot in this case, though not sure which one. If a knot that has worked for years suddenly doesn't, then look to some other variable maybe.

To add one on thing to Peter's Post: One of the commandments to proper leaders: Is taper your tippets. Some times it is a pain in the ass. But it does add strength to your over all tippet. This is the way it works. Lets say for example you tie 8X to 4X the stress is concentrated in the 8X part of the tippet because the 4X is so much stronger. But if you gradually taper your tippet 4X to 6X to 8X the stress will be more distributed. The 8X can release some of the energy to the 6X and to the 4X.
