Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Hunting with Dluver

I've got 27 pounds of venison waiting for me to find time to make jerky out of it. But that's what the holidays are for. Soon, very soon. In the meantime, I'm still enjoying backstraps from a NY buck. And Jersey is next up after I got the skunk in PA earlier this week. And then there's always the remainder of permit bow season as well as winter bow to look forward to.

How many deer can a hunter take in a year?

And do your deer taste better with beer?

One deer, two deer, three deer near...

3 deer near, with nothing to fear.

Miss them all, and wait...

Til next year.

I wish I could get into hunting. I'm only 26 but I feel like it's too late. Every year I say this will be the year I make the dive but then I remember the time and effort my hunter friends used to put in and say fuck it.

emoussa - I've mentored four new hunters the last three seasons for both small and big game. Two were 50 years old or older and one a teen while the other is in his early 20s. It's never too late to start. Not sure where you live, but I would be happy to help you get started when you can take a hunter ed class and get your license. I bird hunt with a pointing dog, bow hunt and gun hunt for a wide variety of game. So I'm always in the woods this time of the year. Hunting in NJ is something you can do on the cheap with a single shotgun and two barrels. Like any other sport, your costs go up from there just like fly fishing. You'll also need a NJ Firearms ID card which takes a good 90 days to receive to buy a long gun like a shotgun or muzzleloader.

...as I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight.....

Here in NJ, it's unlimited does and up to 6 bucks provided you hunt with archery, shotgun and muzzleloader and have all the required tags. But that's not every state. PA is one buck per year regardless of weapon type and (I think) only one doe with a doe tag.

I hunt NY, PA and NJ for deer and I like to take 3 per year which gives me enough meat to fill my freezer. But that's just me.

And yes, Dr, Seuss, everything tastes better with beer :beer1:

Thanks rusty. I think the first step is to take the hunters ed class and get a license. Maybe one weekend this winter.

Don't sweat it if you go online to register for a specific hunter ed class and it's full. Just fill out your workbook and be ready for the written and field tests which are both simple if you follow the online free course and show up that morning. They always take walk-ins! And if you do so, shoot me a PM with your contact info and I'll get it to the northern area Hunter Ed Instructor, Keith, who is a friend of mine. That way he can hand you a type written safety course card and not a hand written one once you pass your test. You just take that card to a licensing agent to get your license. Let me know if I can help!
