How are you photographing your flys???

jcw3

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I have did alot of photography over the years and am always looking beyond the subject of a photo.

One thing I really noticed an like was the way you all photograph your flys. I was wondering what is your method?

Are you setting the fly on a book cover, photo, painting, mounted trout???

I feel the trout like colors of the background really add alot to the fly.

Also is this indoor work? If not what type of lighting are you using?

I dont know if you got this idea from a fellow photographer, or what. But its trully a great idea, I feel it really adds alot to the photo.

It is relatively easy, and your comment, "Are you setting the fly on a book cover, photo, painting, mounted trout" are all right on. You can use any of the aforementioned!

Lighting! I use a flourescent Ott-Lite (Ott-lite is the Brand-name, any flourescent light should do just fine). I'm glad you mention lighting though. Lighting is the key to ALL photography. Once you've got that down, the only thing you have to learn is to be artistic with it. I'm by no means a professional photographer or an artist, but sometimes a thought comes into my head and the results are what you see on this site. Sometimes amerature photographs come out great too, for instance.... Check out the guy with the brooktrout with the leaves in the photo! :)

One thing that really helps is to have a camera with excellent Macro capabilities. This is why I use Nikon equipment. Nikon manufactures the best Macro lense's available. My 3 year old clunker still (Nikon 990 Digital) allows me to get up close and person with GW and a size 32hook.

As far as the idea... I'll take the credit. Like I said, sometimes an idea hits me and the results are what you see here.

Yeah, the photo is a bit out of focus, but this camera has been dunked 1 too many times. Don't worry, I'm getting a new one very soon!

Not another Nikon guy

Nikon??? Best close-up camera maker???

Come on who let you think that, must have been another Nikon Guy. I know how they stick together and strech the truth, kind of like fisherman! LOL :)

All jokes aside those are some great shots, I dont know if anyone has told you, but you have definitly master this task. 10+ on these setups.

When we get to talking photography, then were talking man. I might be Green Horn to the fly fishing world, but photography is another story.

I own an shot with alot of differant camera systems. But I will have to give credit to the one that needs it on this shots, its my Fuji 602.

This is actually a quarter just like you shot before, but I took a little differant angle. So how does it compare to that Nikon??? I will admit in the Coolpix 9XX days of nikon, they lead the industry with closeup cameras, but a few manufactures are putting out some major setups now.

So whats your next one??? Please dont say another NIKON:(

Re: Not another Nikon guy

It's not really a fair comparison being that the technology in your fuji is 2yrs newer than the technology in mine. The Nikon 5400 is also a 1cm Camera.

Either way, I have backed off from purchasing a new digital camera for the time being only because I've done the research and what I'm looking for is not available right now in any camera.

For the average Joe, I still recommend Nikon. Canon also has some really nice stuff out right now. I was going to purchase a Canon (but I hear they blow up) :) <jk>...... but I have a few Nikon Lenses that I want to use on the new digital camera, and of course they wont be fitting on a Canon.

It's very hard to purchase a Digital Camera right now because the toys like your Fuji and my Nikon don't compare to a true 35mm digital camera however, the bells and whistles on the Toys make them so much more appetizing and not to mention, the photographs you get out of these things is phenominal these days. Hmmmm, so why not purchase 1 of each!!!! :)

My next Camera is going to be the one I feel works best for what I'm going to use it for, so it may be a Fuji or a Sony or a Canon or of course, possibly another Nikon.

Nikon??? Best close-up camera maker???
Nikon manufactures the best 'Macro lense's' available! As far as Digital camera's though, don't compare my Flintstone with your Jetson!

With the shot of the quarter your took, your Fuji definetely deserves much credit! I can't take anything away from that. Very nice camera.

Thanks for the info. As for that Nikon, trip I just had to pull your leg on that one a little. I know how its easy to get wrapped up in the digi age.

Its truly amazing how digi cams are coming together over the past year or so.

I am kind of like you, I am wanting a good upgrade myself (WANT, but do not need) in the DSLR area. Canon just hit the market with one, but its to new for me. I like to things go around for awhile so all the bugs can be worked out.

I will admit those small lensed Nikons are hard to beat for closeup work, day in day out. But its truly amazing, now most proconsumer cameras on the are beating on that 1cm mark.

Size is a big thing for me, I love the feel of a big SLR body. But when your fishing, I hate that feel of that BIG SLR body strapped to me. Thats were something a little smaller would come in nice. But then alot of time you lose features and zoom. I guess you cant win for loseing.

Again great shots, just wanted to know how the master was doing it.
