Hot spots in beaverkill: New, and need some tips

Hey, I actually just started Fly fishing last summer. I started up in maine, and I caught mostly trout. It's seems to me that the quill gordon works almost every time, but I've researched that it depends on the river. Can you give me some advice about Beaverkill river? I'm using a 5x leader and tippet, and have the standard dry and wet flies sizes 14 to 18. What do you recommend I use. I tried streamers in croton, but they don't work because my line is too thin I think. This is my box: Where would you suggest I go on the beaverkill if I try casting next week (late april)? What should I use, and where??

5x 9ft. Leader: All of my flies are 14, 16, and 18
Adams wet and dry
Adams parachute
Ausible Wulff
Blue Quill Wet and Dry
Blue winged olive
Cripple Blue winged olive
Hendrickson's dark and light,
Hare's ear dry, wet, and nymph.
Yellow Humpy
Pale Morning Dun
Quill Gordon wet and dry
Royal Wulff
Pheasant tail nymph
Elk hair caddis
Green Drake
BWO Nymph
Pheasant soft Hackle

I also have muddlers and woollys, -they're size 8.
I truly appreciate it if you can help me out, it's seems (from the forums) as if you guys have experience, The more comments the better, because I am an utterly horrible fly fisherman right now. Cheers- adam

The 5x is definitely too light for streamers. However, you will find that until your casting improves you will be losing heavy flies on your backcast. A few beadhead nymphs couldn't hurt. Beadhead Copper John (red, green, blue, black, chartreuse, brass) Hare's Ear, Pheasant tail, and Prince nymphs sizes 12-18 imitate pretty much everything, and you don't have to be an expert entomologist to catch fish using these.

There are some good casting lessons on Youtube. So you know, I've been fly fishing for 15 years and my casting still sucks.

If anyone else has tips, I really need help. I take flyfishing very seriously despite my lack of experience. My questinos are below.

Wait a minute... Have you noticed that the only thread you are posting in is the YOU thread. And you made ZERO attempt at introducing yourself or E-schmoozing any of the senior members of this board. It's no wonder the only person giving you replies is...well, a blonde at heart. And a naive Montanan.
Troll?

Buddy while i appreciate you love flyfishing i have to agree with my buddy kyle that you are coming across selfserving with regards to your keep the comments comming statement.
So hear it is like it or dont.

First off- why dont you go out there and buy a book and or just fish and learn as you go .

Secondly- reveiw older posts on this site regarding the beaverkill and anything that pertains to it.

Thirdly- introduce yourself get to know some people on the board be a little graceful with your delivery of the questions and not so robust and ignorant .

While i do understand that you may be eager and over excited that you are on the worlds best flyfishing site As i stated it comes off a little self serving.

You catch more flies with honey

agreed, your not going to get much of a response demanding answers with little contribution on the board. The beaverkill is one of the most famous rivers in the area so a little research would reveal alot ,but like many anglers your being lazy. Look up a hatch chart on the internet and you will see what flies to get, or stop in a local flyshop in roscoe for advice. Not trying to get on your case, but alot of people these days ask for spots, flies, and anything else that can help them which are things people have figured out with alot of time on the water. Half the fun of fishing is to figure it out yourself........

Pick up a copy of Fly Fishing The Beaverkill by Eric Peper and Gary LaFontaine. It's a great guide book and not expensive.

So what exactly do you expect this noob to contribute? He doesn't know anything yet. As I see it, the forum is a great place to for experts to pass on whatever they feel like sharing. Research today is done a bit differently than when you old guys started. I think the best advice for this gut would be to stop at the local fly shop, ask a few questions and then buy the appropriate flys. Go to Roacos stop in at Catskill Flies for flys and advice then go over to BK ANgler for leaders/tippet etc and ask ask ask ask.

In a few years the noob becomes andexpert and passes his knowledge to the new noobs. It's a cycle.

I give my sincere apologes. I did not realize this was an expert forum, or an actual board of members. I actually thought is was a casual forum to read and ask questions online. My name is Adam, and i'm from NYC. I picked up fly fishing in maine last year, and fell in love with the sport. I caught around 30 fish in my last and only 8 times fly fishing; mostly rainbows and brownies. Did I research Beaverkill? Yes... a lot. in fact I bought every fly that hatches there just to prepare for it in every propper size. The more I can learn the better. Is there a forum where I can introduce myself? i just don't understand the system on this site. And please, don't call me a "noob," You don't know who I am, or what I represent. I signed up on this site to learn about fishing, and hopefully, over time, I could discuss various techniques and events when I develop my fishing abilities. Please understand, I do not intend to be "self serving." If I understood what it was that I could give, I would be happy to do so.

Thank you- adam

Adam,

You didn't mention how many of each fly you purchased. Rule of thumb, buy at least 4 of each. You never know when you'll get into a great hatch of whatever fly just happens to be working. The worse is spending a few hours trying to figure out what they're taking, then when you find it, you lose your last one!

Don't worry about the guys above (or below, depending upon how you have this set up)... Many of them are PMS'ng.

There is a small break in period over here on NEFF thus making it appear to be a lot tougher than it actually is. Some of the less brave have been scared away, never to return because they just couldn't take it (I won't mention any McBabyNames). But, I'll have you know that many friendships have been created over here. Stick around and learn about fishing and of course, post your river reports. After you learn a nice handfull of things, beat up the donate button to show how much you really care! :)

Best wishes, and buy plenty of 5x. (I like RIO).

Adam:

My .02. As a beginner, try not to get so hung up on the proper bugs that are hatching. Stick with general patterns.

For dries use the standard set of flies called Attractor Flies (flies that dont mimic a specific fly, rather a general pattern). For starters, you need parachute adams. Size 12-18 would be good. The Usual is a good fly to use as well. I'm sure others here have their favorites too. For nymphs, use general patterns such as hares ear, prince (the best nymph, IMHO), pheasant tail. Then once you get your "sea legs" or feel bold, switch over to a hatch specific pattern.

Remember the vast majority of feeding fish is subsurface, so when in doubt, use a nymph (or two!).

Time on the water is one of the best teachers. Many here keep journals. They log time of day, air and water temps, flow, time of year, etc. After a couple years you'll be suprised at the info you collect!

Nothing of the sort.

My three daughter's learned real early... when asked "Where's Daddy?" They would lift their tiny hand and hold up their little pinky finger.. and say, "Here's Daddy"

Wrapped around her little pinky I am. To this day, nothing has changed.... except the dollar amounts.

Actually he AIN'T my buddy...

I just happened to give him a call today at lunch time and he is holding his phone up so I could hear the rushing water of the riffles he was working.

NOW... would YOU say that is a sign of a buddy????
