Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

wanna be fly fisher.
When the water is too warm and you don't feel like driving to far off places to fish, what type of warm water fly-fishing do you do?

Use this group to discuss types of warm water fish you flyfish for, what you're using to catch them, and where you're fishing for them...

- enjoy.

Ohh yeah... almost forgot, Try the Add-lib link:

AD-LIB We've had some good responses so far which led to a few funny story's. It only takes a minute.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you sir for providing a spot. Alot of people may laugh, but big bull gills, robins and warmouth are as wary as anything! When I say bulls I mean those 1 pounders guranteed to tax a 6 or 7 weight!. they are almost inaccesible to anything but a fly rod and most peopl don't realize how hard they fight, how wary they are and how common they are! Most people think of brim (sunnies) as little trach fish for kids, but on a fly you can pull in the big boys ad have a ball. Throwing size 6 dave's hoppers, large terrestial and poppers under over hangs can make any day great. run bead head zug bug size or nymph size 12 or even 6 from drop or alone deep will land you into fights you'll find beleivable. Moreover..... no need to drive far office paks, small streams and community ponds are everywhere. Just go out with a couple of size 12 or bigg patch adams, hoppers,, terrestials or nymphs and have a ball! More over you are guaranteed to catch a bass pickeral or crappie everyouting! P.S. speaking of game fish.... don't forget the smallmouth!

Dennis,

Thanks for adding this group! Once the trout season slows down and when I don't have time to travel, I like to fish my home water of the Lower South Branch in Hillsborough.

We've got some great warmwater fishing for smallies, crappie, perch, pickerel, and other fish and it's only a 5 minute ride from my front door.

Hopefully we can pick up some tips here. For smallies, I tie a #8 chartreuse wooly bugger, but instead of chenille I use a similar colored material that has small pieces of sparkley cellohpane attached to it. Works great!

Regards,
Dave

No problem guys. If there's anything else any of you would like to see here, just ask. I'll present all suggestions to the board. :)

Not me. I love catching bream on the fly rod, or any other ultra light for that matter. If Stripers fought as hard as bream do, pound for pound, you'd need a tow truck to get them out of the water.

BTW, bluegill are excellent eating, as long as you take your time while eating them. I won't keep most game fish for the table, with the exception of blue gill and crappie. (guess you can tell I'm originally a Southerner ;) ). Warmouth are fun as well, as is the occasional bass that I've had take a fly on me.

sunnies

Last year, fishing the delaware for smallies. My buddy got a 7-8in sunny that fought like a monster ... He was yelling about the biggest fish then ... hahahahaha. Yup, the little stinker gave a great fight.

Water temps in the ponds and lower rivers must be warming up. I was only getting bluegill and crappie the last few weeks in the pond behind my house, but this past weekend I caught the first few largemouth of the season. They were in the shallows during the day where the water was probably a bit warmer.

Red leg and Dave R,

Great to see it rolling! I can't wait to get at some bream or if I'm lucky smallmouth this weekend. Been stuck in the house two weeks and I have been thinking trout. Only because I've caught one in my life. However, as it warms I keep going back to my roots and thinking about bream, crappie, bass and shellcrackers on the fly............ Trout are out the window for this weekend! Any tips on smallmouth? Never had one on the fly and I was wondering if anyone had info as to where, how and what flies work best. I did get a flyfishing magazine that said big leech looking buggers in the early spring. I was actually figuring big stoneflies nymphs, helgamites nymphs, buggers and clusers.

Hi DJ,

Glad to know that there are other warmwater folks out there! Your're right on target with your thoughts about flies for smallies. I like brown or black wooly buggers. If you tie your own, adding a bead helps get it down a bit. Some of the pools on the South Branch near my home are fairly deep and you have to work to get deep if you use floating line.

I'm not sure how the smallmouth fishing is right now in the river. The weed beds still haven't grown and a lot of guys are still fishing for trout. The water is very clear and so the smallies don't have a lot of places to hide and may be more nocturnal at this point.

I'm still trout fishing and have learned to love them over the last few years. I find fishing for them to be different and challenging and it has really expanded my season. So as much as you like the warmwater stuff, don't give up on the trout either.

Dave

DJ, I haven't gone after smallies yet, but a guy I work with does. Another pattern besides the Wolly Bugger that Dave mentioned is a small crawfish. He swears by em.
