I'm the oddball. I'm mostly a fly caster, but still use spinning, bait casting, bait (something not seen much since the 1920's), tenkara, and canepoles. All have there day. Even have a rarely used center pin outfit.
I like swing jigs for trout in cold, high water with spinning tackle in conditions where fly tackle is a PITA.
Jigging for lake trout with bait casting tackle is a riot. One day on Cayuga Lake I was murdering them on a 100 year+ bait rod, Julius Von Hofe reel, and antique flutter spoons that Seth Green would have recognized. It was fun to show up the modern guys, but the Fingers still have characters that go with old school ways like pulling copper and Victrola rigs with deadly effect.
Forgotten antique tackle still is effective and sometimes gives a new insight into fishing.
Nothing like going back to basics with a rod, a line and a hook. Cane pole fishing is a relaxing way to go.
All forms of fishing have a heritage, skills to improve on, and conditions where they excel. I don't see a need to be stuck with one. Fly fishing is my primary addiction, but not my only one.
