Fly fishing around Saratoga

Winter Blues gives way to Spring Fever
Heya,

What recommendations do you guys have for fly fishing within an hours drive of Saratoga Springs? The Kaydeross is kinda lame. It gets stocked and then fished out. are there any opportunities for catching brawling browns or brookies nearby without driving up to the au sable/saranac area? I need a nearby place to run and gun when I don't have a whole day to give up. I already fish saratoga lake and fish creek, but I miss wading the streams and being alone with the river. ("alone wit the river" may be an oxymoron on the east coast, Im not sure yet) anywho, I appreciate your thoughts.

New York sections of the Battenkill and Mettowee. As I live within 35 min. of downtown SS , I could write a book, but those two are a good start.
DoubleHaul on this forum guides the B. He could probably show you enough water to bulge your eyes and keep you busy for a year of days. Otherwise, find an access along 29 or 22 and explore. PLENTY of fish. A little walking and the river is all you'll see and hear.

battenkill and met are good bets. can also head west. saw some real nice bows pulled out of a sacandaga trib last summer. i hear there are some wild brookie streams very near saratoga as well.

i used to live in saratoga, and the big three always were "the kayde", the sacandaga river, and the west canada. now a buddy of mine swore up and down that the east canada creek was better, but he fished worms and i never saw him catch anything over 12" anyways personally.

the west canada has its spots -- the town of Poland, NY has some nice stretches along farm country where you won't find a soul. get out the topo map, thats as specific as i'll get on that one.

the kayde -- eh. it is what it is.... but rock city road heading just out of town has a few pulloffs that nobody fishes and I've never been shutout on one of them.

the sacandaga, perhaps the best is saved for last. just below the dam in Wells, yes its stocked and fished but its also a great holdover section.... from there down 2 miles is some of the best trout water an hour out of toga.

Take the Lake Desolation Rd Shortcut, but only if you dare....

ive heard good things about the met, havent fished it. the battenkill to me is THE most overfished and overrated stream in the northeast - but thats just my opinion.

brookie water there is.... but its sacred and pretty fragile and the popular ones get poached to death. hans creek for one is great for kids. guaranteed to catch atleast one.

I would try the scroon have had great days there, or indian river up by gore they stock some big browns in there. plus there is a little creek up the by beaver book out fitters that deffinetly has brookies. I have got a few natives in the 10-12in. range in that creek can't remember the name.
some of the hudson up there by 13th lake, fishes well and you can pull a smallie also.

I lived up there for a few yrs. Thats about the time I got the bug bad and started taking tying lessons. Lots of places to fish. hoping to get up there later this summer.

Sacandaga above the lake is a pretty cool place. but if you dont have strong legs (you could float it i guess also) dont go the wading is horrific. well.. in most spots

Ok great tips everyone. I will do some research on these guys.
Battenkill, fished here once and was like wtf, this river has no structure at all. All pea gravel. Think I need to try some new areas.
Mettewee
east/west canada
scroon
sacendaga river
maybe the hudson above the falls
:thankyou:

Lots of water, so many fish, so little time. If you don't mind stocked browns, brookies and bows, Schroon is a good choice. If native brookies are what you are after, plenty of opportunities in the LG area.

I grabbed the river access map for the Mettewee. Can anyone give me a clue which area in the river to target for wading? I can't even tell which way the river flows from the map. Same for the schroon; higher up or closer to the lake? Its not that I mind adventuring, but they are long enough rivers that it is possible to entirely miss the productive water. I know everyone is all tight lipped about their "secret spots" (which I think is silly btw, but I respect your right to be silly) so just some broad pointer would be fine, kind of a "point me in the right direction". Thanks -T

uhh.. I respectfully disagree. If I told everyone where I fished and showed them pix of what I caught there -- you can be damn sure it would become a problem.

I think I'll break out the trusty golden-brown highlighter for this one:

and one more swoosh of the pen for good measure:

I love that "secret spot" rule more than anything!
