Dry Fly Floatant

Trouser Trout

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I have used a few different types and brands of floatant, does anyone have a favorite and why?

Gink for hackled dries and to grease the leader and line and Frogs Fanny for the cdc fly's as it is a powder floatant it won't mat your cdc wing.:)

Just curious, but does anyone use those floatant spray cans you spray onto dries well before you get on the water?

Never used one and didn't think they still existed, but I read a recent article by Lefty Kreh whom still recommends doing this in the offseason.

dry magic...its the only gel floatant I've seen that can be used on CDC as well as other flies. It doesn't wear off like frogs fanny and floats the fly nice. The container lasts a while too since you dont need much and you get a good sized tube

i use a liquid flotant that is homemade. its a similar formula from the old liquid flotants of yesterday that are no longer sold. the stuff works great. it lasts a long time, and doesnt damage any fly that i have ever seen it used on.

You guys USE that stuff in waters inhabited by TROUT?!?

Some of the ingredients of those floatant formulas are(found on the web):

Mineral oil or liquid petroleum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum based products from crude oil. It is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes (typically 15 to 40 carbons) and cyclic paraffins, related to petroleum jelly (also known as "white petrolatum").

4 parts white gas (coleman fuel) with
1 part Triclorethaine (T11) *nasty stuff* do not use or mix with any thing!

i use to to mix kerosine with a soft semi clear wax, kerosine woulddisolve the wax easy,

Mix 3/4 lighter fluid to 1/4 mucillin

block of canning wax to small shavings then added it to about a quart of naphtha

Mabellene make-up remover is a great line and fly floatant.

I think you guys should be thinking of the poor trout that SWALLOWS the fly that is dipped in that toxic mix of chemicals... ;)

Well, I guess it's ok as long as you don't fish ABOVE the reservoirs...

Frogs fanny is nasty stuff that attacks the moisture in you eyes not to mention your lungs. It bothers me (physically) so i dont use it. I used to use it in larger applications. here you can do 300 feathers for what you pay for that little bottle.
Buy Fletch-Dry - Fletch-Dry Waterproofing Powder

I like the descants that dry off my fly and get rid of fish slime. I treat my flies with watershed after I tie them and seem to have no problem. All the other stuff seems to change the color of the dubbing if you ask me. (I know you didn't ask me)

Pure SILICON/Stopcock Grease works great and 1 Tube is enough for 50 years -- It doesnt MAT the hackle and isnt a polutant cost is about 8-10 bucks

I have tried every product known to man an beast to float flies and Dry Magic seems to be the best. And it works on CDC!

Yeah, but will Gink get me fucked up? I don't think I'd snort Frog's Fanny either... I think I hit the jackpot in the Frog's Fanny department, my work (printing) has 2 gallons of ink thickener, which is fumed silica i.e. Frog's Fanny. We never use it, so I might funnel some into my FF bottle.

Yeah kyle i dont fuck with that shit in the house make sure its the hydrophobic type the other shit will sink your flies.

I have always wondered if WD-40 would work to waterproof dry flies. WD stands for "water displacement". Most dry floatents are a silicone oil suspended in a solvent...so is WD-40.

I have been strictly a Loon products user for a bunch of years now. Aquel and Top Ride mostly. The gel products are very temperature stable and are environmentally friendly.

I like using Dry Magic, works well on all flies includind CDC. Isn't Frogs Fanny a dessicant which helps remove the water but doesn't work as a floatant ?

Frogs fanny is by far the best in my opinion. Especially for anything with cdc. Also for cdc, rub it on some Velcro before applying the floatant(waders) if you are waring them.

GaryB: At the Somerset Show one year, they brushed Frog's Fanny on a weighted Woolly Bugger and dropped it into a tank filled with water. It quickly sank but bobbed right back to the surface so I suspect it also has the ability to float a fly. My bitch about Frog's Fanny is that it discolors the bodies of all my flies. All my brown-bodied flies are now a terrible purple color!:beingsick:
