Delaware River near Milford

Barbless Hooks save lives
Anyone ever fish the Milford, Frenchtown stretch of the Dware. I've tended to ignore this stretch for no particular reason. But I live very close to it. My buddies that spin fish land huge stripers on occasion. I don't know many good access points to wade fish. Does anybody?

I live there and fish it all the time, mostly walleye with an occasional smallie or trout this time of year. From May to September you can catch stripers, smallmouth, walleye, and trout. It is good fishing throughout the stretch from Port down to Dingmans and very wadable. What kind of fishing are you interested in? Trout, bass,...

anything really. I like to mix it up whenever I can. I usually go for trout, but ive never caught a walleye in the dware. What tackle are you using
 
I sense a difference in Milfords. Is the original post about Milford, NJ? I think Cdog is talking about Milford, PA.

Lower Delaware is still good, but more towards the smallies and stripers and less towards the walleye and trout. May also get a channel cat or even a dreaded flathead to hit a fly on rare occasion. One of our regular posters lives down there and had great fishing - search out Delaware R posts.

There is good fishing for smallies and stripers in that stretch. Just below the Frenchtown bridge is a sandbar/island in the middle of the river. In low water you can get to the island and on the other side is a good long run that holds a bunch of smallies. Sun tends to bake you pretty good and Tubers can be a pain so go early or later in the day. Muddlers work well. You can also walk it upstream on the jersey side when the water is low. I have caught smallies in the shallow water towards evening while doing this.

Anyone Hybrid fish at Spruce run? Ive caught monsters there on top water
 
Stripers should start about May when the bait starts running. Some stay all summer. My problem is that the stripers are mainly nocturnal and I don't like getting up in the dark to fish them.
 
I catch stripers from May through the Fall. Look for wing dams, creek and river junctions, and islands. I have had great luck with Clousers anywhere from Phillipsburg south past Bulls Island. On Rt. 29 going south from Frenchtown there are several very well marked and convenient access points.

JeffK is right......you can catch schoolies all day long, but if you want big, fish after dark.

I havent caught many stripers but I see a good number caught when I am out. I havent seen nor heard from Davethetrout in a long time. He used to fish the delaware a bunch.

Dave reappeared at GST using the username "Delaware Dave". I have no idea why he hasn't shown up here.

He hasn't been posting much.... He did his best work when he was here.

Dave disappeared shortly after he asked for donations of used fishing equipment for some charitable cause, then he was gone. I really don't think he pulled a fast one but it was strange timing, I will give him he benefit of doubt.
 
I agree. It's a shame DTT isn't posting here any more. He really started some interesting discussions that created a lot of interest and provided some good information.

Two things I didn't post about yesterday to keep in mind when fishing this portion of the Delaware. First, bring waders. The shore opportunities for a fly caster are very limited due to all the trees and bushes. Also, don't forget that you can enter the river from either bank if you have a license from either NJ or PA. Don't limit yourself to just the NJ access points, as there are a few good spots that are only accessible from the PA side.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, There are lots of walleye and trout all the to trenton. I have fished the "D" for 30+ years and have caught lots of them below frenchtown..There are some sea run browns too, if you know where to fish.
 
I am not familiar with the Jersey side of the Delaware but on rides to the Poconos with my wife, we do 32 out of New Hope to 611 up past the Water Gap and from there through the Water Gap Area till we hit 209. I have a few areas above Milford, NJ where I promised myself I was going to fish this year. The State has access points with the canal system which are still open even though the canal has been dry. I also have 30 year old river maps that give access points for boating but I prefer to wade. I want to fish there for Smallies but would love to catch Stripers, walleye or trout.

Thanks Pete.... Things have been a little crazy in my life.... This board is huge and I got a little carried away and addicted to my computer instead of working.
I had to prioritize my life and step back and watch for awhile. All goods were donated to 3 different children and we did change their lives.
I have been fishing a bunch but havnt done much in the river yet this year.
Last season I strayed to my spinning gear and a kayak for months and couldnt kick it.....
Good news is that I am back to my flygear this year and work is back on schedule.

Cdog--I'm heading out there tomorrow to see if I can pick up some smallies or trout. I've only fished there once in the summer and saw monster stripers from the bridge but couldn't hook any. Can you suggest a few spots? I like the looks of the area around Bulls Island too but have never fished it.

Been pickin up a few decent Walleyes,and crappies, but nothing great yet. The river is slightly off color today and looks promising. I fished it last night for three hours without a nibble. I was fishing my 6wt with full sink line. Tried various colors and just no luck. Dave
