Delaware River Annual One Bug

The snow is melting and we are all gearing up for another great year of fishing this spring. With April just around the corner we are happy to announce the dates for the fourth-annual One Bug fundraiser. The event will be held on the weekend of April 29, 30 and May 1 and will again be headquartered at the famous Old Capitol Theatre, 170 Front St. in Hancock, NY. As always, the weekend will begin with a reception, banquet and auction on Friday night at the decked-out theatre, followed by two days of team fishing led by the country’s best guides.

The One Bug™ is the most important fundraising event of the year in support of the charitable work of Friends of the Upper Delaware River. Proceeds will be used in our ongoing battle for consistent reservoir releases, habitat and stream improvements and the enhancement and protection of the Upper Delaware’s wild trout fishery and flood mitigation.

The event, which raised more than $50,000 in 2010, celebrates the sport and camaraderie of fly-fishing while boosting the regional economy. We are also pleased to say that the One Bug™ has been a much-needed shot in the arm for the local economy.

Many residents, weekenders, and visitors will receive the 2011 One Bug™ Program allowing your ad to be seen by a select group of people that help support or local economy. We hope you will consider placing an ad with us to help support FUDR’s ongoing efforts to protect and enhance all our community has to offer.

In addition to placing an ad, please consider joining us Friday night – a limited number of tickets are available at $100 each. For more information, go to Friends of the Upper Delaware River: Protecting People and Habitat , call FUDR at 607-363-7848 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 607-363-7848 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or email Dan at catskilldan@mac.com

Thanks – see you at the ONE BUG™!

What is the record time that someone lost their bug?

Is there a prize for that at the end?

I run an annual golf outing and the foursome with the highest score, get the MOST HONEST GOLFER AWARD.

A selve of tennis balls because it is obivious golf just isn't their game.

With those DELAWARE RIVER fisherman.. I know I just can't hold a candle to them and their 60-80-100 foot casts, so I do want to win something though.

Just figure if you had one for who lost their one bug the fastest I would have a shot at winning something.

Just asking.....

AK,

This is the most serious non-serious tournament ever. No cash prizes, just bragging rights. The goal is for everyone to have a good time while at the same time raising much needed money for the river. Last year we wrere able to raise $54,000, that was matched dollar for dollar by the National Fish & wildlife Foundation and spend it on some much needed spawning tributary habitat reclamation and improvement on Sand and Cadosia creeks.

I'm sure if you signed up a team this year we could come up with a "most honest golfer" type prize for the first angler to lose his fly. I'll even donate a badminton set for the prize!

A great cause and I wish FUDR all the best this year! I love the idea of a razzie prize for "last place". Skim, the tennis balls is funny and gives me ideas for the Musky One Fly. Sand and Cadosia need all the restoration they can get, I hope plenty can come out this year to help and catch some fish, meet new friends, and help the river to boot :thumb:

For anyone interested, here are the Official One Bug Rules from last year, which will also be followed this year. Scoring is not based on numbers of fish, but rather on a point system selected from up to six fish the contestant chooses. All fish must be immediately returned to the water unharmed. Penalties exist for any fish harmed and all fish are measured on a specially made device so the fish does not have to be removed from the water.

The event is a total blast and we typically have about a 90% return rate of prior years competitors. Interestingly, the pros have never won. It can be anyone's game. The real winner is the river and each and every participant form the Friday banquet attendees to the last place finisher. The prize is a fun filled weekend and is shared by all involved.

All the guides are seasoned Delaware River professionals who give their valuable weekend to the event. With 15 teams/boats spread over sixty or more miles of river and limiting it to just using one fly, the catch rate is less than half the normal thus reducing the impact to less than what an average angler would incur.

Heavier tippets than normal are used by contestants to reduce their risk of losing their fly, which results in fewer takes but also quicker landings.

Last years winning fly was none other than the Adams parachute, size 14 and by days end held together by Super Glue and tied with a fine wire ribbing to keep the toothy brown trout from completely trashing it.

ONE BUG™ Rules and Regulations 2010

Teams
A. Each team will consist of two fishing contestants. Alternate contestants may substitute on a daily basis. Alternate contestant fee is a one time $300 fee.
B. Only one member of the team may be a professional. A professional is defined as anyone who, within the last 3 years, has performed services as a guide or captain for compensation.
C. Two contestants from opposing teams and guide will occupy a boat.

Equipment
A. Contestants will furnish their own fly fishing equipment. Not more than two fly rods, fly reels and fly lines per contestant.
B. The type of fly rods, fly reels and fly lines are the choice of each individual contestant.
C. The use of lead weight, fly floatant, leaders or other accessories will be at the discretion of the contestant.
D. No motors of any kind on boats during event hours.
E. Artificial or man made scents and or attractants are prohibited.

Event Flies
A. Any single hook conventional fly pattern (dry, wet, nymph, streamer, etc.) may be used.
B. Flies must be tied on a single hook.
C. It is the contestant’s choice what fly and fly pattern may be used each day. A different fly and fly pattern may be used on the second day.
D. The guide must approve the contestant's fly selection before the boat enters the water and or official fishing start time. The guide will take a picture of each contestant’s fly for each day with the portable camera provided.
E. Repair of flies may only be done with the use of glue or any adhesive. Any re-tying of the fly with thread or fly tying materials is prohibited. Broken hooks may be honed or filed to a usable sharpness via any sharpening tool.
F. Traditional strike indicators are allowed. Flies, even those with broken hooks, are not allowed to be used as an indicator. Only a single fly may be attached to the leader.

Fishing Procedure
A. All federal and state rules and regulations governing the waters being fished will be unconditionally observed.
B. All river channels are fishable.
C. All trout species will be counted in the scoring
D. Fishing start and finish time for each day will be announced on Friday evening. All contestants are required to start at place of departure (put in) and remain with the guide and boat to the designated place of completion (take out).
E. Guides or boat partners may assist in landing any fish to be scored with the permission of the fisherman who has the fish on the line.
F. Flies if snagged or lost may be recovered as long as the recovery does not in the guides’ opinion endanger anyone trying to retrieve that fly. The fly may be reattached to the leader and fishing may continue.
G. Daily scoring ends for the contestant when his official fly becomes irretrievably lost. That person may continue to fish for the remainder of that day, but no fish caught after the contest fly is lost will count for that day’s scoring.

Boat position assignments (front & back) will be mutually agreed upon by each contestant so that each contestant spends one half of the fishing time in the front of the boat. This schedule continues even if an angler loses their fly.
H. The contestant in the front of the boat will, within reason, have the choice of boat position, such as right bank vs. left bank, casting distances, etc., or stopping the boat to fish a particular location.
I. If conditions warrant, guide may require contestants to wear their life vests while fishing or being transported on the river.
J. Any infraction of the rules will be recorded by the guide on the space provided on the scoring sheet. The rules committee will have final say regarding such infractions.

KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS EVENT IS A CELEBRATION OF FLY FISHING AND GOOD WILL AND CAMARADERIE SHOULD BE PRACTICED BY ALL!

Scoring
A. To be counted in the score, the release of a caught trout must be witnessed by the guide.
B. Each contestant will be allowed to select seven (6) trout to measure during the day. Five (5) of these fish will be scored. All trout not selected for measurement will be released immediately, preferably without removing them from the water.
C. Fish are measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. Whenever possible measurement of trout will be done in the water. The guide will measure the trout with the official scale provided. Any trout which measures ½" or greater is rounded to the next full inch by the scoring committee. For example, a measurement of 21 ½" equal 22 inches for scoring purposes. The guide will measure and record the exact fractional inch and allow the scoring committee to tabulate the final value.
D. Each of the five fish selected for scoring by a contestant will be scored as follows:
<table style="margin-left: 5.4pt; border-collapse: collapse;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td style="width: 217.8pt; border: 1pt solid windowtext; padding: 0in 5.4pt;" valign="top" width="290">

25”+ 150 points and 50pts per inch over 25”
</td> </tr> </tbody></table> E. 100 points will be awarded to an angler each day that angler keeps his One Fly.
F. A penalty will be assessed for any fish killed or ruled by the guide to be unable to survive. Each of these fish will be measured and the scored value of that trout will be subtracted from the angler's score. That trout will not be counted against the daily limits of six measured trout.
G. Fishing tributary streams is PROHIBITED.

These rules are subject to change and modification as directed by the “One Bug™” Rules Committee.

Just a question...

Since I like to WIN all the time, in reading the rules;

Teams
C. Two contestants from opposing teams and guide will occupy a boat.

Is water cannons (Big Shot, water pistols, etc..) permissible to use when your opponent is fishing?

Is rocking the boat also with in the rules?

AK,

Rocking the boat might be allowed if you competed. Everyone knows how much you enjoy "rocking the boat" and like I stated in an eirlier post, one of the goals is that everyone has a good time.:)

Water cannons and the like would have to be excluded for safety reasons. I'm sure you understand. But do keep in mind that I'm the best witness money can buy :)

AK - I'm thinking the water cannons are not as intimidating as simple water balloons. Instead of a steady stream from the cannons, I like the surprise and stress caused by lobbing in a water balloon when least expected. Wish I could put up my half, we could pair up with Joe D as our guide and wreak havoc. :guns:

Of course, I'd give us one year before we were :ban: but heck, we'd have had some fun along the way an maybe enjoy a :beer1: or two when we were done. Assuming they didn't :hang: before we got out of town with our :victory:

Brian,

I'd say after reading your last post that you had more than a couple :beer1:tonight!

Just getting started, in fact :):)

On a serious note, are the guides paired up with contestants via a draw or can you make those arrangements yourself? Didn't know how you guys did that for One Bug.

The guides are each assigned a beat for the two days. Each day, each competitor is assigned to a guide by lottery. Every night everyone meets for dinner. Cocktails are permitted and encouraged prior, during and after dinner.

Wait a second...

I was asking a legitimate question, I am just trying to help out the other contestants.

As for bragging rights... how much is this years winner allowed?

The amount of bragging the winner is allowed is unlimited! At the winners expense they can put it in light at Time Square, take an ad out in the Wall street Journal or even have an airplane tow a sign up and down the river or along the beach.

However, the tradition has been one of humility. The winners do a small bit of chest pounding at the awards dinner on the final day of the tournament but after that they are very quiet about it. I think it has something to do with the marabou and softex the other contestants douse them with, but I'm not certain.

As far as rocking the boat... So I'd like to know where, you got the notion, To rock the boat... ;)

PS

No singing allowed onboard.

Only if you provide a mailing address... or you could simply come to the Friday night dinner & auction and pick one up in person.

Mmm, I don't remember having those memory problems when I was a young lad like yourself. Then again, maybe I forgot.

A copy of the program for the ad you bought for the One Bug. You even forgot you sent it already...

Thanks again!

A copy of what????

I forgot what we were talking about.

Tomorrow evening is the One Bug Banquet & Auction in Hancock, NY. Trout fishing doesn't look too promising this weekend so you may as well come and enjoy the open bar, dinner and auction. Heck, the price of admission is worth it just to see the ad AK told me he took out in the program.

The Old Capitol Theater 170 East Front Street, Hancock, NY. Tickets are $100. Start time: 7:00 PM

Joe, you forgot to mention the most important thing. I'll be there signing copies of my new book. It's the same as the old book which I'm sure you've all read.
