Deciding on getting a fishing vessel..

Trout Guy

Brookie's or Bust!
Well i have been fishing from kayaks the last couple years and all i have to say is that it fucking sucks.. So ive decided that I am going to be in the market for either a small drift boat or canoe to fish the tail-waters and still waters in the catskills/ADK's. And possibly a crummy row boat to leave on the Neversink Res.

Ive never bought or owend a boat besides a 30 year old Avon my father gave me and the forementioned kayaks. So im kinda looking for a little insight and basic information regarding what i should be looking for as far a practicality, ease of transport, over all cost/matinence, what i should look for as far as common damage/wear areas and Etc..

thanks

first of all you need a new fishing vehicle, being from the land of audis, bmw's,and benz myself, I can tell you that you look like a flat lander, and you never want to seem like a yuppy when u head to higher elevations so step your game up, shell out a few extra bucks, and buy a junker to lose the stereotype you are bound to get/deserve when rocking an A4 audi. Secondly, with the boat situation, if u like to wade, get a pontoon. U only need to get from spot to spot. If you like the bigger water, get a drift boat, and you'll be able to hangout when the fishing isn't good, fish to typically uncatchable fish when wading, and look as cool as you do with your troutguy license plate while whipping around in the audi A4. The fly show will have plenty of boats for sale. Take a look. Not to be overly critical, but jesus that plate on that car looks pathetic, cmon if you really like the outdoors that much to specialize a license plate, get a subaru/green maching(RIP) and stop looking like a suburban pussy who was raised on ranch trips to montana spring creek ponds and pheasant hunting in bergen county backyards. You'll at some point learn its a skill emersing yourself in the environments your hobbies take you to.

My buddy rolls up to lake placid for our annual fishing trips in a pimped out es 350. Sure, he gets called a yuppie, but hell fish the balls out of anyone out there. Not sure I follow the whole 'get a new car' thing because you'll be judged. I grew up not giving a fuck about what anyone else thought about me. Hell, if tg wants to roll up to a ranch to fish a spring creek in montana with a Pearl white escalade sittin on 24'' spinners, tinted out with underglows, so be it...that's like saying I need to get a new rig because only hicks drive decked out hemi's and don't wear simms gear, so I need to drive a car that people will portray someone decked out in high quality gear. Lol. While I know exactly what you mean my man, I personally don't care what people think...just take a look back to my bead thread or the early days when I owned golden beetle. :)

Further, if you saw my snowmobiles, you would immediately think, 'dangerous, snow cross wannabee, arrogant prick with no consideration for others' but if you trail rode with me, I'm the most respectful, polite, stay to the right, rubber side down trail rider out there...if I go with your theory, I would be riding a skidoo 2 up, fan cooled, Sunday morning 'get the newspaper' type sled. FUCK THAT. My sleds are top of the line, big bored, most advanced suspensions out there and I love it, regardless of how others depict me when I roll up to a checkpoint or restaurant...
Again j, I see where your coming from, totally, but fuck it..let them think tg fishes for trout in new zealand 7 times a year and pheasant hunts in south dakota for 2 months during the fall...trout guy fly fishes and he is passionate about the sport and that's all that matters..

I say keep the audi and the license plate! I love it! And black is sexy! (For the 1st 12 seconds after you wash it)

That's pretty damn funny.

I would say scrap the canoe idea. With your vehicle i would go with an framless pontoon like the Outlaw Rampage. It can be put in the trunk of your car. I use them on the Delaware and you can go to my site driftawayoutfitters.com and watch the videos to see the type of rapids they will take. You wont encounter anything like that in this area but just show you how tough they are.

I think this should work well with what you will be transporting with, i think cabellas makes some nice lightweight oars that should fit in your trunk as well. What's nice about this one is, although it is difficult to see in the photo, it is equipped with a factory installed hull to stream bottom sighting window, so you can see the big one if you drift over him and you can actually observe the hatch while it is taking place.

So I should sell my high-powerd German sports sedan to impress a bunch of wanna-be rednecks in the parking lots? You fuckers should show a little gratitude, since our wanna-be yuppie asses actually help your local economies, otherwise you'd be huffing glue and air freshener instead of smoking the good stuff and drinking Coors Lite. Trout Guy, your next car should be an M3, C63 AMG, or S4. Nothing says kiss my ass like a nice smokie burnout.

Most enjoyable car I ever owned was BMW 740 IL that i recently sold, was like driving a 747. Fast, comfortable, quiet, rear wheel drive traction control made it pretty damn good in the snow, big enough for 5 full sized people and cooler full of road soda's and cigars. I missed it the day I got rid of it.....And I don't think a lot of those rednecks are wannabee's.... I was fishing in the Harriman Reservoir this summer right before irene hit, and i saw 9 people roll in, in a Ford Ranger, trust me they weren't faking it....... I took my kids, my purdy mouth, and my Lincoln out of there in a hurry....

Oh I've had my fair share of real redneck run-ins. Stumbled onto meth operations, been shot at, saw a couple of dudes fishing with a 12 gauge once (they were actually nice guys, a little off though), seen some questionable summer-time hunting on public roads. There have been times where I've been a little worried about where I'm parking my whip, however, the popular spots in the Catskills are not a place expect to get shit, and I certainly don't expect people on this board (ok, my expectations may be a little high here) to have reverse car snobbery. At the end of the day though, I really don't give a shit what people think.

Lol Looks like i got some advice.. Well, for starters i also have a 98 TJ wrangler with a 2.5 in lift and 33" bfg M/T's. If that aint blue collar idk what is. I am also building an 2002 explorer which is going to be the vehicle im going to tow with. Considering my jeep gets 8mpg on a good day lol. So lets rule out towing any vessels with my audi which deff. has enough power (for what it is) to do so btw.

Hey leave my skidoo formula 500 alone, it has very sensitive feelings lol. And Ill agree on how fucking sexy black is when its fresh outta the booth, but working at a bodyshop, ive grown to resent black cars.. every wash i have to buff and wax it. Pain in the mother fucking balls!! We've actually been using a new clear that doesnt swirl AS BAD as lower line crap. So im gonna be repainting it soon in black with some very coarse metallic and a burgandy tint. Like the flake you'd see on a bass boat lol!

Hey i got ur pm, that boat looks pretty interesting! I might look into one, do they accomidate 2 people or just one?

Hells yea! Sitcky buds and nun's piss is what i eat and drink for dinner!! lol.

But ive been looking at 04-06 audi S4 avant wagons, sooo fucking sexy. Especially if you get a PES super charger, oh my god do they sound nasty!!

boat is rated for class IV water and has an 800 lbs capacity. my buddy has his son sit behind him. But there is a model that has two seats.

Get yourself an 04-06 Avant, throw on a roots-type blower, Miltek down-pipes to full system, and your set. I know a couple of people who have this and they are very happy. Alternatively, if you can find a 99-01 S4, then you can do the APR RS4 stage III conversion. I'm kind of the digging the CTS-V Wagon, Diamond-black paint and black wheels, its pretty bad-ass.

Milltek makes a very nice exhaust for audi/vw, i wish i bought one instead of a Borla, i have had to replace the flex pipe and re weld the downpipe flange already and its barely a year old.. Id rather go with a centrifical charger beacuse roots style chargers rob more hp, per hp gained. But the sound of a roots will make any man cream his pants.

I dont mind the b5 s4's its just so fucking hard to find one with low milage. Even b6 s4 avant's are hard to come by with under 70k. Ive been in ko4'd s4's and their scary fast, the apr stg 3's have got to be absolutly nuts! The only down side to the 4.2 fsi's is that there not sleeved, so if your ringlands fail, your fucked!

CTS-V wagons are cool, but ive worked on a few non cts-v's and their make like shit. GM's quality is absolutly horrible. Almost all the interior trim pieces are made from britle abs plastic not TPO.. Breaking trim panels and electronic pigtails are inevitable. My friends father bought a brand new 2010 camaro ss-rs and it had electrical problems from the get go, instrument cluster harness shorted out and the BCM got fried. The dealership gave them every cent back..

But at any rate, i think im gonna go towards an aluminum or composite drift boat. Its pretty hard to find any used ones arounf the east coast.

The B6 S4's aren't with the FSI, Audi didn't introduce FSI to the 4.2 until the RS4 and S5, so you don't have to worry about the carbon build-up issue that the early FSI 4.2 had to deal with. One with 70k isn't as bad as you think, you just need to find one that was taken care of (i.e. synthetic oil every 5k, etc.)

I know a few guys who had centrifugal blowers on their VR6's, and they were scary fast. The big downside to those types of systems is that all of the power is on top, not very linear. Nothing happens until the last 1000rpm, them boom! You miss out on the instant torque that you get from a roots or screw type system. I've driven a b6 with a roots blower, and it feels like the older AMG Benz 5.5, just brutal.

My next car will likely be a CPO C63 or M3. I need the V8, I'm not much of a turbo guy.

My friend bought a used Clacka direct from Clacka. Shipped it out here and everything, the boat is mint. Give them mfg's a shot and see what you can find.

I havent had anything other then 4cylinders and the straight 6 in my jeep. Im looking forward to having a luxury car that sounds just as nasty as a zr1! I did hear about the carbon build up in the rs4's. But Id rather buy a b7 s4 instead of spending around 35G's on a used rs4, then thake that +/-10 grand, buy a supercharger and coilovers. Waalaaa 2x the car compared to a stock rs4 lol.

Sounds like u know know alot about cars. Do u work at a shop??

I do think im going towards a used drift boat. I know Clacka and Hyde are pretty well know for making good drift boats. But are there any other good quality manufacturers worth reccomendation?

This has been a cool thread to read. It started off by making assumptions that you were a yuppie using feathers to wipe yourself while eating caviar. Come to find out you're a wrencher and bodyguy who is passionate about what you do, are clearly good at it, and we have found out that you're not the only one. This has been one of the most interesting posts I have read in a week (although the bar has been set low with delusional, paranoid narcissism).

In terms of other good boat companies. You know about Clacka and Hyde. A few others with a good reputation are Willies, Fish Rite, Pavati and one other I can't think of right now. Let me have another cup of coffee........

Who gives a crap about how you get to the river, Just get there! If I strike up a conversation with you on the river or at a TU meeting or the coffee shop, I dont know what hoopty got you there, we are there and we have a common bond " Fishing".

A choice of a vehicle is a very personal thing, maybe getting to the river in a nice high performance German sedan is part of the whole experiance, maybe the vehicle has to serve many roles ( work, family etc.) maybe the guy just likes nice cars and fishing gear and can afford it.

I don't care what you do or what you drive or what slings your fly line I'll fish with ya!

I've driven a B6 and RS4 back to back, and I didn't feel that the performance gain was so great that it warranted the extra $30k. I even like the old B6 better than the current version, even though the current version drives better. Without the 4.2 though, it feels like its lost a bit of its soul.

Never worked in a shop, but I've been playing with these things since I've been driving. As far as towing goes, you can tow with anything. I used to know a guy who towed his bikes to track days with an S2000.

Some of the best fishing places happen to be off of some of the best roads. Some parts of old Rt17 are amazing (gotta watch for cops though). The places I fish in VT have insane roads that go to them. If I could figure out a way to carry all of my fishing shit on my motorcycle without being overloaded, it would be perfection.
