A really nice fly box created by, Chuck Ledgerwood

Earlier this week I was asked by, Chuck Ledgerwood, via email to take a look at one of his home made fly boxes. So I replied and I asked him if they were unique? When he responded with, "Every box is hand made and the grain of the fly box is unique in every way", I jumped on the opportunity to check them out. You might be thinking, "it's a piece of wood, of course it's unique", but let's face it... so many mass produced boxes look identical so what's so different about this wooden box?

Today's boxes are plastic and have these pretty cool compartments but the downside of owning these plastic boxes is that they offer no character and they're all built from 12yr old kids in sweat factories. Yeah ok, I'm guilty of owning a few of these boxes but for good reason. They are quite functional and fairly compact. These boxes do come with a pretty stiff cost though. Here's a C&F Design box that retails for $25.95.

Hey look.. I love the C&F boxes but the fact is, it's 25.95 for a piece of plastic molded by a machine and assembled overseas. It probably costs them under $5.00 to deliver this box.

I have more fly boxes than I know what to do with so when Chuck offered to send a sample box I thought to myself, "I hope this is a little different than all the others I own." I don't use the wooden boxes because they are generally bulky. I don't like bulk so I leave them at home.

Chuck started in 1996 making fly boxes from exotic wood. He wanted a box that brought a "grass roots fly fishing experience" then set out to do just that. The other day, I received a somewhat small package in the mail and thought it was a bit small to be a fly box. I opened the package and sure enough inside was a beautifully handcrafted fly box. I really wasn't expecting this. I was expecting something considerably larger just like all the others.

So check this box out and let me know what you think.

The other positive about this box is how it's designed on the inside. Such a simple concept and very functional. The insert (the one without the flies) is removable and can be replaced with a new one in a matter of seconds. This allows for the option of a quick change, just like the plastic boxes offer..

The box is very light weight and will be a very functional fly box. The "Premium" line of boxes are made from exotic wood and the build quality is solid. There are a few models of the "Premium" fly box and they're all under $50.00. Remember, this is a hand made box. It's crafted and assembled by Chuck.

The hinges are brass and there is a magnetic insert which keeps the box closed.

Other than everything I've mentioned here, the box is aesthetically pleasing with its duo tone wood combination and brass hinges. If you open the box and sniff the inside you'll notice that it has a really nice smell to it. :) The boxes are available in different sizes and the prices vary.

Chuck doesn't just build and sell fly boxes though, check out Chucks website at Prize Catch - Wood Fly Boxes, Bamboo Fly Rods, and Landing Nets. If you place an order, let him know we sent you!

Any questions about the box, feel free to ask.

How do you like it?! I'm a classy guy. May have to order a couple.
It's a great little box. If you're looking for something that sticks out, this is it. It's something nice to have that's not the same as everyone else.

Laser etching is also available and done onsite. So if you wanted to personalize it, that's an available option. I don't think there's a charge for it but you'll have to check the website just to be sure. The box in the picture cannot be laser etched because of the type of wood.

I just ordered 3 of these...I mentioned NEFF and they guy charged me more than the list.:)..no really, I did order three...Chuck was really great..I had them personalized as they are gifts for my three fly fishing mentors and benefactors....Thanks Dennis for the link, really nice stuff.....reasonable price....

T.T. you are funny.....
Chuck e-mailed me after I ordered the boxes...it seems if some, or one of you boobs think that the fly boxes cost $29.95...that is the one that Cabarle says is plastic and costs $5.00 to make and they get $29.95

The boxes Chuck makes are real hard wood, and can be engraved... I have not received them yet, but I bet they are worth every penny of $42.00 ro $40.00 dollars that the premium ones cost..magnetic closure, nice hinges, all the stuff..............I didn't even look at the lesser boxes, but I am sure they are great as well....

Just to clear up some confusion on my part...I am the boob....Chuck did NOT charge me more because I mentioned NEFF.......That was a joke......so...great people to deal with, and order yourself one or two or three......Dennis...Nevermind, I figured it out...gosh I'm slow!!!

"If you open the box and sniff the inside you'll notice that it has a really nice smell to it"

I cannot tell you how many times I've been looking for this feature when out on the stream away from regular source of sweet smelling box.

The point was... You won't have to carry your weed around with you. The box will do just fine. :)

I did order three of these boxes as gifts for friends....They were well made, and came promptly after I ordered them.......Just don't make jokes publicly about them....:)
Great value for the price,
Thanks Chuck!!!

Why can't we joke?

But it's NEFF? And we make fun of ourselves. I was going to ask Chuck if he could make a big box with lots of compartments for GB to keep his meds in.

I could be incorrect but I do not believe there is a tree big enough.

Since we brought this topic back up... I took the box that Chuck sent me and have loaded it with all of the flies Lightenup and WBD sent and this will be donated along with the other stuff I've purchased (with the help of Tomfly and Trouser Trout) to, Project Healing Waters.

I'm waiting to receive a few more items and the stuff will either be sent via mail or in person. I've already spoken with the person who runs Project Healing Waters and she was thrilled to hear about what we're doing here.

Who besides DDluver, lightenup and tomfly sent flies?

Nodoby.

At least 1 other person is sending stuff and I'm putting an order in today for some hatch garments to send over.

I am surprised, out of all of the boobs who post pics of their flies, pics of their fish, links to their own sites, promote their own raffles, post items for sale, promote books and fly designs, post meeting dates, and various other displays of self promotion etc...... Only DDLuver, tomfly, and LU sent you flies (and we know LU's will look like shit). I am actually surprised. DC hosts the best interactive fly fishing site on the web and in my couple of years of posting I have never seen him ask for anything. Just surprised you didn't get a better response.

I can no believe that only a hand full of us participated in this donation drive. (flies items or cash.) I do not get it. DC has a good thing going here. TT must be correct it you are all about self promotion. If you watch this video and still decline to do what is needed. Then you are some cold hearted F@@@s

If I had known about the project healing waters thing I would have sent flies. Sheesh. Thanks for telling me guys.
