danme

Cast Drys over them Enough They Will Rise
I was bored tonight so I thought I'd try a Fly I never tied -- The Infomous Stimuator -- I have never fished or tied this fly so I fgured I'd give it a fair shot this season -- any comments and or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Dan

Let me know if there is anything or anyway I can improve this -- It is the first time tieing it and all I had to go off of was a picture I saw on the net -- No Pattern or instructon -- Any Comments suggestions or critisizm is accepted and thanked

Peace
Dan

Not bad dan,
look at ak's stimulator, it's very tight!
i think you just need to refine it it a bit and it will do fine.

Thanks Ron -- Appreciate your input -- I respect you as a fellow tier and fisherman so anything coming from you is a good thing

Peace
Dan

Dan,

I am not a good tyer by any means, but that looks mighty fine!

Im a big fan of the Gene Wilder look...The more hair, the better in my book...Well, except for...you know..

Especially dries, the more elk/deer you can pack on, the higher she will float. Can run that sucker through some class V with no issues...Who the frick wants to be messin with GINK? Please, you can colorao nymph with that high floater!

Keep it how it is...if not, ill take them. :)

Wow Chris thank you for the compliment -- Coming from you it means alot -- again thanks

Lightenup ----- I never have either -- People say they work great and alot of fisherman use it for hunting trout when there isn't a hatch to be had --- I have read and heard that they are very productive so I was bored and figured what the hell -- maybe it's time to try this Stonefly fly pattern for myself -- Hopefully it works as good as others say it does -- time will tell

Peace
Dan

Ok now im psyched -- I may have to tie a dozen more and try different colors/bodies -- Maybe Olive -- Pheasent Tail -- Gray -- And try different hackles also -- Hmmm The possibilites are endless

I always have a few BIG stimi's, on brown/olive/ and golden in my box...

As you guys previously mentioned, they make for a GREATTTT searcher pattern when the hatches are non existent...

How many times have you gotten to a stretch of water that looks fishy as hell, sun is high, and no hatches? TIE ON A STIMI!!!! Fish that water like a red headed step child!

How many times has a trout came up and swallowed your indicator? TIE ON an INDICATOR WITH A HOOK, A STIMULATOR! :)

Dan, youll have a blast fishing those beauties!!!

Very cool Chris -- Im wanting to try it NOW DAMMIT -- LoL --- Come on WARM UP already -- Ahh fuck it Pequest here I come Sunday -- Anyone want to join me -- feel free -- Lets wet some lines

Peace
Dan

Hey Dan - looks good from the other pics I've seen on the net. Possibly a little bit less on the deer hair. Oh yea, did I forget to mention I'm still a new tyer? Hahahaha. Tom

NOOOooooo dont do it. I have been there and done that. The fly mags are always coming out the the greatest fly of all time and you tie up a bunch and find out that they are just ok, but not the fish magnet you were led to believe. Tie about three. if they work out for you fine if not then you wont be left with a box full of flies you never use. Just my opinion

The instructions in the latest FlyFisherman are from Kaufmann the originator of the Stimmy
and are very good. According to him the wing should only go to the halfway point of the tail,
yours is a little long. He also stresses the correct hair to use. I'm going to tie some this weekend.

Ok Dan, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you are a man who appreciates honesty to improve your tying since you're requesting feedback, and not the bullshit ass-kissery that your getting. I'm not a tying expert, but I can tell you that the fly is a little wacked.

- Tail is way too long, it should be hook-gap.
- Wing is way too long, should extend to about the middle of the tail.
- proportions are a little wacked and the eye is too crowded, which also throws things off.
- Taper the body and head.
- Hackle is splayed probably because of the bulky tapering, tie feather in concave side down.

These flies are difficult for me as well, took me a couple of tries to get it right, I also had problems with crowding the eye. Best way to avoid this start well back of the eye. If it looks like your starting too far back, then that is the place you want to start at.

Oh yea, and when you finally get this fly right, throw some rubber legs on at the thorax.

trout nazi is 100% correct..its a little more difficult of a pattern to tie..but once you get used to it then its no different from anything else..we all had to start somewhere, but it surely needs to be refined..look at charlie cravens pics of it and strive for that look..he goes into great detail with pics in his book how to tie it..

Besides the colors already mentioned, since we're in the east, don't forget some in a fire orange color. These were tied by the late Fran Betters. The color's a little washed in my picture, but the body and thread are fire orange.

Regards,
Mark

Danme, I said I was going to try this fly because of this thread....TY
So, here they are for your criticism....please, be honest, smoke in my ass will just make me fart...:fart:
I'm having trouble with the wire and accidentally second stim.JPGfirst stimulator.JPGcatching the hackle, and believe me, I wiggle the wire back and forth (have fun with that one)......I have to work on the taper, and just keeping it real "tight", any suggestions, if you please.

lightenup you tie some nice flies

Thanks, emoussa, but I have a long way to go to tie the flies I want...look at A.K.'s stimulator in the fly swap...that is clean and tight and perfect...This is what I am striving for....:)

look at A.K.'s stimulator in the fly swap...that is clean and tight and perfect...This is what I am striving for
..and that's exactly why I'm in the swap...I get something like that, and I will use it as a model for mine and it makes me try to tie better.

i think they look ok..what i do when wrapping wire thru hackle is to pretend the hackle isnt there..if its good hackle with still barbs just make your wraps quickly..if you try to wiggle the wire thru the hackle it will get sloppy..the stiff barbs of the hackle kinda just get out of there own way when you wrap..

image.jpgI took a shot at these last month. Black w/coastal deer hair, black foam body w/dyed black elk and a traditional stim. The coastal deer hair ROCKS. Sunnies hangin off the hook can't sink these things!

some of the nicer stimmy's i've seen! DANME - lightenup's hair fiber stacking is appropriate. I think your stacking skills can get honed in over time to make each fibers end even with one another.

Lightenup - what I really appreciate about your these 2 stimmy's (especially the burgandy? colored one) is that the head of the fly (where you've tied your elk (looks like elk) hair wing & grizz hackle wrap is so narrow and not at all bulky. I have a problem of having too 'steep' of a taper at the top of the fly leading towards the eye of the hook due to the bulk of my elk hair wings. What happens with this is that last wrap of hackle slides out of place - towards the eye.

instead of wire, try thread. i've found that easier for the stimmy's to 'navigate' through the hackle without disturbing it

Danme, I said I was going to try this fly because of this thread....TY

On the wire thing, I've read in Cravins book that wrapping the same number of wraps and angle as your hackle will minimize trapping. I started wrapping my wire in a mirror image of my hackle making perfect X's with each wrap and it has all but eliminated trapping. Like Charlie says, "wrap like the hackle ain't there", no wiggles.

In his book Tying Dry Flies, Kauffman lists the TMC 200R as the hook to use. Since I started using this curved shank hook I find my Stimulators look 100 percent better.

tie them like this
