    Speckled trout recovery

I not suggesting they don't survive, but assuming in a tough year that some die and fewer spawn, what typically does it take to bounce back to a normal population level in brooks or small streams?

    Speckled trout recovery

I saw streams this weekend that looked beautifully fishy with the runoff, but know that they were nearly dry last year. Assuming they even held trout, how long does it take a stream/brook to recover from a dry year?

    BEAVER burning the spots

No, these are non permit signs, but they really seem to be on private land. Just don't want an ass full of birdshot. As to the posted signs, is there a requirement for land owners to update signs yearly?

    BEAVER burning the spots

Speaking of spots, burning or otherwise, I was driving around this weekend looking for smaller water and came across a nice little stream where about 1.5 km ran along a road. The downstream end had a bridge where there were two yellow posted signs with names on and addresses on them. About 1/3...

27" 10.5 pound brown trout caught on small WTS

The key here is the culvert which offers protection and acts as a pen of sorts. Clearly, the fish was put in as a fingerling and fed daily for a few years until it was ready for its closeup. Canadians have been doing the same thing for years, but with mice and beer.

    Anyone fishing the Esopus?

I've fished it about 4 or 5 times over the last month. Mostly near the lower end. It's an unusual river. While the muddiness makes it an ugly river to fish the clarity doesn't seem to affect the fish at all. I had success with a dry dropper (smaller is better), short casts into the heads of...

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

My guess is that the PFS takes precedence as I doubt the DEC would stick them on private land. Though it could be a high water mark situation. Reservoir wading?

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

I hate to beat this to death, but it is a little crazy when you look at that map. Could there be a walking easement that's not shown? Never having trespassed on club land (to my knowledge) what happens when they catch you? Swarming security guards? Hounds released? Shots across your bow...

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

That's actually from the Ausable, but same idea. I'll give the Tuscarora Club credit for clearly delineating the start of their property with handy lines across the river. I doubt I'd fish there again, but was curious as to whether I was trespassing on the riffle.

Yeah, give them time. They'll rediscover disco and flee for the big city in droves.

Dude ... Hipster in the country = Hickster. All the rage at the farmer's markets along the 28 corridor. "OMG! OMG! OMG! HAND-CHURNED BUTTER!!!"

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

Thanks. I don't want to trespass, just wanted clarification of the where the private water began above the campground. The signs don't help. Other than a "get out of the water" what authority do clubs have? I believe "Hickster" is the new "Yuppie". Certainly more visible on the Andes/Phoenicia...

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

Thanks. I've been spending time on the other side of the mountain in Phonecia, Andes and Margaretville and the difference between those towns and Roscoe and LM is striking. Not up on my Catskills history, but is it due to the Borscht Belt failing and throwing the 17 corridor into depression...

Two questions - BK Covered Bridge pool and Mill Brook

I found myself at the CB pool by accident on Sunday and watched a few guys fishing. Walked slightly upstream past the ranger station to the riffle and slight spillover just below the split in the river. There are orange PFS signs on the same trees as no trespassing signs. What does that mean...

    WHY Fly Fish?

I was doing a driving tour of Ireland one summer and stopped in a local pub for a pint where I found myself sitting beside an old ghillie. After some polite conversation, I asked him why he fished. He took a moment and said, "there are two things that I know are coming: death and the strike of...
