Martha's Vinyard

A few years ago, I took a ride to Martha's Vinyard to catch the stripers. My trip was with my father and his long time friend, Rick. Only one of us caught a fish through-out the 5 day trip but it was an overall nice experience (Once!). I didn't mind the fishing so much, it was the drive that I absolutely hated. I hate being in a car.

A few years back, I attended a wedding in Maine. I chose to fly and arrived 15 minutes before the people who drove. I'd prefer to sit in the airport than in traffic.

Anyway, here's a small video I put together with a drone and a few dSLR pics thrown in.

It's a fun story about the fishing derby, things that happen and have happened, the different people that go to the Vineyard just for that, how one of the winning fish had a lead sinker in it's gut that the stomach had grown around and had clearly not been put there by a fisherman but cost him the prize, it's a lot of fun to read, not heavy stuff. If you're in to fishing and go there you should get a copy. Lots of local color and insights to the society there.

Okay, you have me hooked! :) I'm going to get a copy of this book and read it. I'll let you know what I think.

Nice trip Dennis. I started going there in 1981. I started to fly fish for stripers years later and took my son to fish in early June which is the sweet spot for stripers sipping sand eels in the evening. There is nothing like it. Within the past few years the cost of going there has gotten stupid expensive and more aggravating making the drive and the Ferry even more prohibitive. I might consider another trip if the Striper "rebound" continues.

Would have been nice to see those stripers when I was there! Actually, we did see a few but they either didn't stick around for more than a few minutes or, they were way too far for us to reach.

IMHO the best fly fishing for stripers is in early summer when they key in on the sand eels. And during this time, the evening is magical.
