loose loops, sink tips
So, I got suckered by one of those Orvis fliers that they send out to every chump who has ever bought some overpriced fluorocarbon from them, and one day later, some of Orvis's low end breathable waders and boots are on their way to my house. I don't even know what happened. It was like a date with Bill Cosby. Now I have new waders I didn't know I needed. (too soon?)

Well, I did need this shit. My waders leak in multiple spots and my boots have been shedding their soles into the east branch for well over a year now. But anybody have any experience w/ this stuff? To the extent that any logic whatsoever was applied on my part, I figured I was getting slightly better than Cabela's workmanship for Cabela's pricing. That's about all I can say for myself.

(and don't tell me to buy G3s instead. fishing's not a status thing for me - I'd wade in jeans and sneakers if I could. Just want to know if Orvis's low end stuff is junk.)

A few years ago, I bought the mid range Orvis waders, for about 180, and they were leaking within a week or two. At the time, I was fishing small streams and did bushwhack through some brush...

I also have owned a pair of low end Orvis boots. This was years ago, and they had absolutely no ankle support.

The best I have found on the market are the Orvis sonic waders. They are not cheap. 280 maybe?

But I cant remember the price because I have had them for so long.

As to boots, I have had the same problem as you with disintegrating soles. Lots of companies have solved that problem with replaceable soles that you insert in to the boot.

Korkers were the first to do this, I think, and I have been fishing with my Korkers for 3 seasons. They may be rotting, but on top and I really dont care what my boots look like under water, or above water either....

For a 100 bucks i would have low expectations. You can alway buy simms headwaters waders on sale. They won't break the Bank and the warranty is pretty solid.

I laugh at people that SHUN simms or patty because its too "yuppie." Perhaps that is, but when you buy a new set of waders each year and a new wading jacket every 2 and Im still on my same pair...I just laugh...

SIMMS ALL THE WAY YOU CHEAP FUCKS

I bought a pair of Cabelas waders and boots 5 years ago while I was in college and I'm still using them. One or two holes from thorn bushes that were easily repaired but they are as dry as the day I got them. If you take care of your gear, you'll be fine. Whenever I do by new waders I'll probably go with Simms but thats only because WBDluver has convinced me I'll catch more fish if I look good.

I had Orvis silver label waders...they lasted three seasons of fishing almost once a week.....I found them to be worth what I paid, but I just bought some SIMMS made in China, and the are much more comfortable, they fit better......as for durability, this is my first season in them, so we will see....good luck.

when i fish, i look really good. i'm like a freaking model out there.

gucci diamonds, gucci watch, gucci belt, gucci rings, gucci hat, gucci pants, gucci shirt, and a gucci, uummmmmm and a big house in queens.

for real though, i have two pairs of cheap cabelas waders. one pair is relatively new and doesn't leak, the other has 3 seasons of wear and does leak. the reason i DON'T want expensive waders is 'cause i would get too stressed out every time i'm bushwacking and find myself in a stand of thorns, or have my fly come flying off some rock snag straight into leg.

i'm gucci,

and you guys are all polo.

I've had orvis waders and if you do a lot of bush wacking then they'll probably end up developing leaks down the line. Mine were puncture leaks, the material just isn't thick enough in my opinion.

Althouh, the sonic seam waders do look more durable then previous waders they've put out.

I've had my Simms freestone waders for a while now and they're just starting to peel at the stocking. I've pushed through some thick pricker bushes and so far no major leaks, beside a few from my own errors of havingy pistol holster rub throug.

That's the thing though. My shitty cabelas waders were like $120 and they lasted me 7 years. So maybe a $500 pair would last me 35 years. By that time I'll be more worried about the leaks inside the waders, ya heard? I'll need the Beetle fishing diaper. Just not convinced it makes such a huge difference.

I know, i know, look good fish good:

plus what moosekid said. I hate using expensive gear because I worry about it getting f*ed up. I am fully capable of backing over my fly rod at Long Eddy at 11pm. It's not whether it will happen. It's when. I will pass out and light my waders on fire. Again, only a matter of time. My last hiking boots went out like that.

On top of that, it's not the waders you wear, it's how you wear them. Case in point is this gentleman. I featured his work before in one of my posts but never got the reaction I was looking for:

Still, rethinking the cheap Orvis shit... at least if you wear cabela's you look like you don't care. Wearing bottom of the line Orvis says you're both snobby and cheap. No win situation. It's fine to care about how you look.

But you don't want to care too much:

Everybodies low, low end stuff is Chinese made junk. I resisted for years buying a decent pair of waders for the same reason as you, but last year at the Sommorset show i found a pair of G3's in my exact size for basically half-off (keep an eye out this year). They've been pretty much bullet-proof. Yea, Simms may be perceived as the hipster gear of the fishing world, but who is looking at you anyways standing in the middle of the river? Better than freezing your balls off with leaky waders.

It hasn't helped him believe me:)

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA THIS IS PERFECT.

Thank you.

That video killed me..

Am I the only one that has a pair of LL Beans? They suit me just fine, no leaks after 3 seasons with plenty of bushwhacking, occasionally fishing on my knees and often times taking a seat on a rock for whatever reason. The price is right too.

If im on the stream and i see a fisherman not wearing Simms i just turn up my nose and i wont even talk to him. I have a reputation to uphold and cant be seen fraternizing with those that wear cabelas, gander mountain, wal mart etc. you guys probably have a jar of Uncle Mikes salmon eggs hidden away aswell.:clown:

Simms all day...I don't shit about image, this is also the most economical route.
All waders leak for me eventually just Simms last longer, and they have a pretty good repair program (around $40) which will get you going for a couple more seasons

Question for mudbug...if you're so worried about image why do you have a big dick on your head in your avatar?

Simms g3's are the wader to get if u fish a lot and need a dependable set of waders. Super comfortable and I have had mine for 4-5 years now with no leaks until this year. I have contacted them about sending them back and it's a fairly good system that appears to be honoring the warranty. My dad had orvis waders for years and they always leaked within a year- their seams are terribly put together and they leak in the foot within a few times being used. Better to fork up a little more money and avoid the hassle IMO

JC, the orvis sonics are better than Simms for the money.

By far.

LL Bean makes a pair of waders for 59 bucks that I like quite a bit.

It does not endure in tough conditions tho, but for summer float trips on the delaware in easy conditions, you cant beat em.

I went upper end with my ll beans!!! but with a lifetime warranty , who cares....It'll be the last pair of waders ill EVER buy:smiley-sniffer:

can you explain your avatar a bit, maybe?? i like it, but i'm not sure if i get it. we have a jerome bettis torso with a john candy head and tipi legs?? and dick smoke??

That's a good point. Their warranty is money. My dad hasn't bought a new watch in 40 years - just sends back the one he bought from them and they fix it or replace it.

My buddy just got rid of his high end orvis waders for a pair of Simms G4Z's. He hated the orvis waders. I can only imagine what Orvis' low end waders are like.

It's easy to just hand out waders when they're made in a sweatshop by little kids.

I have a friend who swears by the LL Bean warranty. I think he has sent back a pair of waders twice, and they came back either new or repaired. And quickly.

I sent a rod tip that broke back, and they sent me a new one...

Great company.
