Im thinking of going to Sandy Hook early nest week. This is my first time at trying saltwater so Ieed some help. I have a 7wt rod, will it work? Also flies, what type should I bring? Any tips would be great.

    A Polinger...
Forget the 7wt. Much too light. You will be miserable with it. With any wind, a 9wt would be the lightest you should go, a 10wt is optimal.
For flies, large deceivers (larger than a 7wt will throw), sand eel patterns, half and halfs. Colors can vary. Sand Eels should be olive.
I would not bother with the Hook. Thats pretty much done for the year. Unless you are up in Raritan bay on a boat.
You should really work the beach south of Point Pleasant. From Normandy beach, down through Casino Pier in Seaside. Ortley, Lavalette. You can also work your way into the park at Island Beach.
Check here and post for a fishing report the day before you are looking to go. I have quite a few boat and beach guys that I get reports from daily, I can atleast give you a vacinity to start at. I can assure you it will be way south of the hook.

Nothing grows faster than a fish between the time the fish takes your fly...and the time he gets away.
