New to NY looking for the basic, non-secret fish spot advice

So I'm guessing this is mostly downstate folks, but I just moved to Albany County from Seattle. I'm wondering a few things, good places to fish in my neck of the woods, basic fly patterns I should be carrying, and what weight rods I should be using.

Washington State mountain trout tend to be itty bitty so my current selection on rods is 3 wt, 5wt, and an 8wt I need a new tip for.

Any thoughts, tips, suggestions are welcome.

About an hour south of you is the Esopus Creek and its tribs. Stocked browns and good wild rainbows.
3-5 wt rod, 3 wt nymphing rod if you have one.
Usual nymphs, Hares Ear, PT, Stone, Caddis.

Google Esopus PFR, Schoharie PFR, West Kill PFR, etc, to get a map of the "Public Fishing Rights" access areas for water you might want to check out. The Schoharie is actually a Mohawk River trib that starts in the Catskills so I'm sure you can find some nice spots up there, which is half the fun. Enjoy.

Although a shell of its former self, the Battenkill River will be getting some much needed love soon. I believe TU has funding to start a major project for that watershed to begin restoration efforts. Something to keep an eye on for the future as it's not too far from Albany county.
