    Fall stocking

With nothing better to do on Sunday I tripped up to the Pequod to kill a couple hours, leaves weren't too bad but the flows are terrible. Fishable water is scarce to say the least and combined with the number of people out made the problem even greater.
I fished, or tried to fish a few spots below the hatchery and hooked a couple fish that fought, and I use that word loosely, more like they surrendered as soon as the hook was in their mouths. After I had enough "fun", I headed to the handi-cap stretch as there was one run I wanted to try before leaving for home. When I got to the parking lot it was filled with cars so I decided to take off my boots and call it a day of fishing. Now with shoes on I took a walk to that run to have a look see if it had been fishable. I saw one big rainbow suspended in the water column at the head of the run and watched it for a few minutes. While standing there I noticed a fish rising fairly steadily just across from where I was standing. I couldn't see anything on the water so I figured it was sipping midges. Well I couldn't stand it any more watching that fish rise so I walked back to the car and quickly rigged up my WTS rod with a Griffith's Gnat. When I got back the fish was still rising so I made a few casts over the fish but was having a hard time getting a good drift standing on the bank. After about a dozen casts and not even a look I changed up to a deer hair caddis pattern and after two drifts the fish ate it and I landed a rainbow of about 10-11 inches that gave a better show than the earlier larger fish. Now it was time to go home.

Used to love going fly fishing for trout. Now the past couple years been nothing but lower and lower flows. Went to the north and south branches this wknd. Pathetic. Don't even feel like tying flies anymore. Someone please make it rain dang nabbit. Saw many trout though.

It really is depressing. Add that this looks like the 5th straight lousy spawning year in a row. We looked like we were on the right path in spring and early summer, but I can't recall much in the way of rain for at least 2 or 3 months now.
