Klg
I fished the south branch in the gorge for the first time in almost 25 years on Sunday. Also the first time I fished with my brother in probably 35 years. He's just getting into flyfishing after decades of my convincing him
lots of great memories fishing this stream growing up. I stopped in at Shannons to get a license and see what was happening on the river. Apparently there was a sulphur hatch goin on all day which was a bit confusing to me. When I got into the gorge I didn't see any sulphurs coming off (must have missed it
) in any event we spent some time nymphing and fishing some buggers. My brother missed 2 on a bugger but he was clearly hooked on the fly fishing game. I stuck around after my brother headed home and for a brief flurry around 8pm of sulphurs maybe lasting 10 minutes. The front was moving in and the temp dropped so I imagine that put the hatch down. Took a quick drive up to long valley where I used to fish and was not surprised to see the changes that have taken place. Still it's pretty undeveloped considering it's been almost 43 years since I started to fish this area. Back in the day we used to start fishing at the general store and either walk upstream or downstream and sometimes both fishing every inch of the stream. My dad was not a huge fisherman but he recognized our love of it and took us often. He would fish for a couple of hours then make his way to the general store where there was a small dining area in the back and have his coffee and a danish while reading the newspaper. I always knew when he was in there because he would put his fishing rod out in front of the store. I can't think of a better way to grow up and it was great to visit a place I used to consider my second home. Hope everyone is having a great fishing season. Tight lines!!

Re: Klg
That's a nice story MAC, I was there on Sunday as well...I also didn't see any sulphurs....except a few around 8:00 o'clock, nothing was rising.....I caught a bunch of fish on an iris caddis and a pink scud...I did see a bunch of spinners late, again nothing was rising.....
Sulphur hatch....all day? who were you talking to? Was Grobert working down there?

Re: Klg
It's a rare thing to see sulfurs on the SBR in daylight hours. They hatch right at dark most times and are often mixed with spinner falls. The Musky gets them earlier in the day for some reason. At least the invarias and dorotheas.

Re: Klg
I feel pretty confident they were cahills especially since the guy said they were big. I guess it's possible they were gray foxes but I don't know the hatches on the south branch too well so can't say. Saw a couple of March browns but that was it until the brief hatch around 8pm.

Re: Klg
Mac, I see you are wearing your new Lululemon waders. Very sleek.
I was on the upper SB on Sunday evening. Took a few small fish on caddis patterns (elk hair, tabou), fished till about 8pm and did not see but one or two sulphurs.

Re: Klg
I was there on Sunday afternoon also. Saw a couple of light cahills, no sulphurs, but I left at 6:30, and like someone else said, they usually come right before dark. I caught 5 or 6, before this year I hadn't been there since they closed the road and made it catch and release. It is much nicer now. I caught fish on a march brown emerger and soft hackle hares ear. I haven't caught much on caddis pupa's so far (any color), those were traditionally good patterns for me.
