Re: Some recent flies from the vise
That is very helpful - fish this fly in the film. This line of reasoning ties into the debate about the so called "educated fish." The question is, where in the water column would fish be most likely to take your fly?
In this regard, fish that feed on the bottom are educated fish, and would not be interested in eating rock snot, or a synthetic imitation of rock snot. Fish feeding in the film probably would try a didymo salad, if it were presented properly, and mistake it for a caddis pupa.
Also, FYI... your didymo fly, fished on the bottom, would probably get covered in real didymo, which would make your fly more like a bait than a synthetic...

Re: Some recent flies from the vise
Sure, is this the fly?
If so the hook is a TMC 2457 in sizes #16 & #18
Shuck - one short piece of pearl Krystal Flash no more than 1/2"
Abdomen - stripped peacock herl
Rib- Extra fine gold wire
Thorax - Brown Haretron
Wing - One well mottled brown partridge feather
Bead - Clear plastic bead
Note: Sometimes if I want to achieve more depth I use a very small gold bead. I fish these with no additional weight either blind across and down or to fish that are boiling and not truly eating off the surface.

Wbranch, thanks for the recipe.
However I think he was referring to the recipe for this fly:
Hook: TMC 2457 16-18
Bead: Small gold bead

Re: Some recent flies from the vise
Everyone on this site is much more shallow than you give them credit for. THouse was asking for the recipe for the fly in the picture that was just a hook and a bead, LU's remark was that THouse did not have the skills to tie a fly with only a hook and a bead.
Just more of the sophomoric humor that IS this site.

Re: Some recent flies from the vise
WBranch, the guys are right - I was being an ass and referring to just the hook and bead. But I do really like the fly you provided the recipe for and will be tying some up - they seem to incorporate some of my favorite attributes on a fly. In addition, it is refreshing to see some flies and fly recipes on here - so thank you for that!
