Tying a March Brown Deer Hair Emerger

Here's another tying video of a simple but effective large mayfly emerger I made with Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. I found this pattern in the jaws of a brown I caught many years ago on the main stem, and since then I've tied many to imitate all the big drakes that hatch near dusk on most evenings in May, June and July........Thank you to whomever broke that fish off. I couldn't be simpler to tie, and yes, it is very similar to an X-caddis, just larger and tied on a curved nymph hook instead of a standard dry.

You need to be tying an ISO emerger if you want to catch some fish now.

You need to be tying an ISO emerger if you want to catch some fish now.

You are correct, though still a boob. This pattern works for that,too. Use a #12 or 14 hook, same shuck, claret with some black and grey dubbing, and a grey deer hair wing. Or you can tie it on this hook, which is how I like to tie the Iso/slate drake emerger:

I like the elongated scud type hooks for the slate drake ISOs I also like the cdc wing nice and long. It presents a better profile. The cdc looks like the wings emerging and a trailing shuck is also key. The ISOs where I fish are huge and a big profile fly in the riffles gets a lot of attention

If Matt would have tried to use those he would have been standing with his rod in his hand looking dejected while we pulled in fish after fish. It would have been a sad scene indeed.
