Re: What flies do you tye?

Tom, I totally think fly14's post was just a little poking fun. When I read it I got a good chukle. I think you may have taken it a little too serious, besides we all know Tobias is a dirty snagger( sorry Chris). Hell iI still have a bit of that in my blood.

Beads? We don't need no stinkin beads.

Re: What flies do you tye?

Lots of things I agree with here, but here are my main reasons for taking up tying:

You will have the flies you want, even beyond what fly shops sell. I've caught more fish on an Iron Lotus variant than on a few standard patterns combined, but have never seen it in a fly shop (not sure why it never caught on the way rainbow warriors did).

Similarly, you will have your flies tied EXACTLY the way you want them. I like tying nymphs on 2x short/wide gape hooks, 1 size larger than I want. Gives a body of the correct size with a much larger hook gap, which is great on size 18-22 nymphs. You can also get the weight you want. I find I often wish for a different type of bead, or no bead at all. And you can adjust your hook style, which is most important if you have a large bead closing the gap a bit.

For me it's not about the cost, but about getting exactly what you want to make your days out as good as they can be. How much will you pay to go fishing for a day in gas/time/etc. How much is it worth to you? And, I think most here would agree that the first fish caught on a fly you tied is an incredibly rewarding feeling.

    Dear LU and Finite,

It's okay to make fun of me. I'm not a veteran.
