Ramapo River Restoration Project Moves Along
I was asked to attend last night's Borough of Oakland council meeting to answer questions and continue working with the town and their engineering firm to help with what will be a nearly 2 3/4 mile channel restoration project from the Mahwah border downstream to where the Army Corps flood mitigation project began.
For those wondering, the reason TU is committing staff time to this is because our CEO offered any private or public landowners who experienced channel damage from Hurricane Irene staff help. I was engaged by the Borough initially through their Flood Commission and later by Borough council to help with this project. I have been very happy to see a single town in the greater Passaic River Basin enlightened about restoring a river's health rather than another attempt to channelize it and move flooding elsewhere. And for those of you that fish or even paddle the 'Po, you will enjoy your outings more once this is done. Here's today's article:

A fish ladder? For what obstacle and for what species of fish?

Re: Ramapo River Restoration Project Moves Along
The reporter may have made that up. I watched the meeting on TV, if a fish ladder was mentioned, I missed it.
I believe there's a small dam in Mahwah, but that's not in Oakland's jurisdiction.
Between the Dundee Dam, the Great Falls, and the Pompton Lake Dam, anything that would benefit from a fish ladder is unlikely to be anywhere near Oakland.
Two other things related to the Ramapo also happened at last night's meeting.
- The "buyout" for the first batch of floodplain properties, along Roosevelt Blvd was approved.
A resolution opposing the proposed "Pilgrim Pipeline" project was passed. This project will certainly degrade the watershed, and has the potential to poison the aquifer.

I missed that in the article. Nothing related to this project includes any type of fish ladder nor was that brought up in any context at the Council meeting. Not sure what she is referring to? Good catch, but no fish ladders are a part of this project nor would there be any need to build one.

I just noticed....
That article was in the "Printed" edition of today's Suburban News, way too soon to be based on last night's meeting.
If you read some of the quotes... October 8th is referred to as the future."On Oct. 8, we hope to have a common understanding between Trout Unlimited and our project engineer on what this specific project needs to succeed," Kunze said.

Re: Ramapo River Restoration Project Moves Along
I'm guessing the water was pretty low even with the rain. Did you get them on nymphs ?
Even though they are only 6" to 8", the meat fishermen will keep them.
