Nymph Identification

Hit the Ramapo for a couple hours last night after I got back from a weekend away and found this nymph that I've never seen before. It was probably three times the size of the other mayfly nymphs on the rock and instead of crawling was snapping itself almost like a shrimp would do out of water. Any ideas as to what it is?



Fishing was pretty good and only one other guy out there that I saw. Water was very low tho and saw a big Heron with a very nice sized trout - was surprised it could carry it. The Sulphur hatch was pretty good just before/after dark.

Most likely an Isonychia. Need to look top down for the pale stripe that runs along its back. They're hatching now in local waters. And they are larger than most NJ mayflies we typically see.

Yea I use that site a lot when tying flies to get a general idea of what most bugs look like...they really do have some great pictures.. but I wasn't sure how to search for a bug that I didn't know what it was, which is why I asked

That's an Isonychia nymph. Early season they are quite large. They are swimming nymphs, that is why their bodies articulate like that.

I found a video to tie a Iso nymph and an Iso emerger..the Iso emerger video is one of yours and in it, the narrator (ashamed to say I cant remember his name even tho he helped me out so much with my tying) says "As is so often the case, he is going to use 6/0 Olive Danville for his thread" haha
