This one gets my dander up. Politicians do have similarities the world over, but the misery, cronyism, corruption, and huge loss of human potential created by authoritarian leaders has no parallel in a Western democracy, as messy as we are. Obamacare or average male lifespan of 55 years? I'll pick Obamacare. Russia is no democracy; democracy can be an awkward, crazy, splintered form of government, but the alternative is awful.

    Good point.

Basic human rights must be respected here, and you are absolutely right to speak loud and proud in favor of universal healthcare in America.

I know, the rich who owned slaves cried loud and even rebelled at the prospect of losing their personal, human chattel, and they are crying again about basic rights being extended to all today.

    Some things never change.

    Great post, Mac.

When you can show me in any of our founding documents that we are all entitled to healthcare from our government we can talk. Of course that doesn't exist. Now if you wish to pass a constitutional amendment that all citizens should have basic healthcare perhaps that's a more valid argument and at least that would ensure the states would have some say in the matter. Instead we have a law (the aca) that was passed by buying votes and lying to the public about its true intent. Hardly an example of democracy in America now is it

    What founding documents?

The one that says African Americans are three fifths of a human being?

Perhaps those documents would support your argument.

So you point to a single flaw in the US Constitution that was long ago corrected and say "let's toss that document out the window"? Typical liberal garbage.

I'm not saying toss it out and forget it completely.

It would look good in a museum, perhaps the Museum of the American Slave Trade.

But I would definitely scrap it and rewrite.

I'm sure if you were there you would have convinced all the delegates from the south to do the right thing. I doubt you even know why that happened in the first place. I know you like to think creating a new nation is a simple and clean process. I'm sure with your 20/20 hindsight you can point out all of the things they got wrong. Perhaps though the proper way to look at it is that they gave us a framework to begin as a nation and a way to fix things as we evolved (that's a constitutional amendment in case you forgot). In conclusion I'm gonna side with the folks that were actually willing to sacrifice themselves to get to the point where we could create a constitution. After all They pledged their own life and liberty and sacred honor to do so. I just don't think anything you can say would compare. Now if you want to suit up and stand the line to defend all that has been given to you I might change my mind.

If you want to portray proper historical data, replace rich with democrats. If I recall my history correctly. Republicans voted 100% to abolish slavery . The Democrats voted 83% to keep slaves in chains.
