I'm with Jonboy... used spinning takle most of my younger years.. only occasionally used a flyrod... now its flyrod all the time unless I have a good reason to spin.... which so far this year has been zero....

I fish mostly fly but occasionally use spin when fishing for sea-runs for example and also strictly use spin in the salt.

I've never tried a fly rod in salt. I would imagine that unless you're fishing for bonefish in Fl, it wouldn't be much fun. I can't picture myself casting off a jetty or off the beach. I love spin fishing off a boat for fluke, blues, weakfish, ... you know. Although it doesn't beat fly fishing for trout, I still enjoy it.

Joe I think you have probably been spoiled by your experience on Marthas Vineyard - sounds like you had a ball but the odds of duplicating that in NJ are slim. I've been fishing the surf in the Sandy Hook to Long Branch area for many years and have only had a similar experience twice. Big days like that are fairly common from boats but not from the beach. Nevertheless it's like trout fishing in that it's better than anything else even if you get skunked. I only spin fish in the salt but I must say when the fish are feeding there is no more successful method than fly fishing. Fl

Fly for fresh water ... Salt water mostly fly, but If i go out deep, I use spin

johnw, i was told by the locals on marthas vineyard, the island is very well known for great striper fishing especially from the beaches.And im sure is different off the jersey coast.But hell i was like a kid in a candy store! Its like my monatana trip every july i cant duplicate it here not even on my best day in the catskills!

Joe I haven't fished in either place but I'm sure that's an excellent comparison. Just didn't want you to get your expectations too high if you try it at the Jersey shore. Be glad to share what local knowledge I have of the Sandy Hook area if you are ever interested - live 5 mins away and know some that fish the surf daily.

My go to method of fishing is a fly rod. However, I do own some spinning outfits and even (Argggh!) a bait caster.

100% fly for trout and freshwater. About the only other creature I seek out these days is the blue claw crab which does not require a hook, nor do I practice C&R on anything legal! I expect to break out a spinning rod as I introduce my grandson to fishing.
