My first trip on the West Branch

This last weekend i made my first trip on the West Branch. We launched at the sewage treatment plant and floated down to Balls Eddy. I always knew that it was a tough river and the fish are well educated and that was surely true. Its was super hot and sunny and not much bug activity except for a sulpher hatch before noon and than at sun down. We were able to hook into 5 and land 3. Over all it seemed that it was slow up and down the river. Minus the fishing it was an absolutely great experience and such an amazing river. I cant wait to get back up there in a couple weeks. My next time i am going to make it a shorter distance so we can fish harder. Also being i was rowing and fighting a horrible hangover i didn't get to fish as much as id like to.

If he was the fish count would have been higher.

Yes it certainly would have been. Being its looked down upon on the river I wanted to challenge of fishing mostly only dries and some nymphs. My next trip might be a different story.

Most times during the hot summer days, catching nothing but being on the river is just fine. If you're a numbers guy, different story. But, try using the time that you're not catching anything to practice casting or even read a book. I sit back and kick my feet up on the seat in front of me and get a sun tan.

To each his own but don't take the easy way out. That's lame.

Oh I was perfectly content with the trip and how we did. I have no complaints. I do however enjoy catching fish with multiple techniques, if that means using a fly rod or centerpin so be it. I'm more about quality than quantity.

I will admit I'd rather catch one good one on a dry fly than catch 20 on a centerpin.
