James wanted my input on the rod as far as asthetics go. I gave him free reign since he is the craftsman, and after I saw the progress of the build, I knew I would not have even come close to what he is envisioning with the rod.

It's all held together with clear electrical tape. Yes I know, who would want to pay a seemingly exorbitant amount of money for a rod held together with $2.00 tape? Well...this guy...in fact...come November I will own three spliced ferrule rods...held together by clear electrical tape....


The metal ferrules create a stiff spot in the blank and all breakage occurs there because there is not enough give. When you splice the ferrules and connect them this way, then you are in turn creating one solid rod. Better action and much more sensitive.

Spliced Ferrule rods have been around longer than you think. So clearly it works. Psst....you are supposed to tape your graphite rods together too. Ask anyone who fishes with a spey rod. Most tape their ferrules together so they don't snap off a section.

The rod has been finished and should be in the mail some time in the next few days. I can't wait to get my hands on it! I will be using a 3.5" wide drum Uniqua on the rod (if things work out) with a scandi line in the 320 grain window (or some place in there).

This rod is a 10' 10" splice jointed, hollowbuilt "TroutSpey" for a 5/6 line in a 3/2 format. Medium flamed cane, impregnated and oil finished, bright hardware, N/S sliding band seat over highly figured cherry insert, matched agate stripping guides with blush wraps tipped in hot orange. Rod weighs 7.9 oz.

This is my longer/quicker/heavier line taper of the 2 TroutSpey models that I make, I find it is well suited to large trout, coastal char, smaller summer run steelhead as well as smaller salmon with either swung, skated or stripped fly presentations. The rod is at home with 320-400 grain lines depending on style or will cast well overhead with either a DT9 or WF9/WF10. Photgraphed with a favorite reel, my Shamburg/Confluence co. "St. Mark" 3 3/4" Wide Drum reel spooled with a Cadno silk spey line 380 grains @ 31' head... just perfect for this rod.
