Delaware River is 5th most polluted river in U.S., environmental group says | NJ.com

The Delaware River, running along the western border of New Jersey and providing drinking water to millions in the Garden State, is the fifth most-polluted river in the country, according to a report released Wednesday by Environment New Jersey, a nonprofit environmental activist group.
Most of the 6.7 million pounds of toxic chemicals estimated to have been released into the Delaware in 2010 are due to the DuPont Chambers Works in Salem County, which is legally permitted to emit 5.3 million pounds of effluent into the watershed, says the report, which relies on federal Environmental Protection Agency data.
New Jersey — where state environmental officials called the report "bogus" — ranked 12th in the amount of toxins released into waterways, behind geographically bigger states with heavy industry such as coal mining, according to the report.
But releasing millions of pounds of pollutants is still legal, 40 years after the federal Clean Water Act was enacted. Environmentalists and officials say it’s time to enforce the spirit of the law with more stringent limits on chemicals being released into water.

I just have to wonder where they came up with that information?

Or could it be some how tied to their fund raising activities?

I think we should approach the Discovery Channel and have our own version of Whale Wars here on the Delaware.

not for nothing but that Dupont plant is practically in the ocean it's so far downstream. But if this most polluted status can be used to protect more of the river, I approve.

Closing in/by 2015 as I recall. They do not discharge into the Delaware except warm water.

On the bright side, when the DEP eventually accomplishes it's goal of putting so many environmental regulations on American business that we lose every one to China and India and the day comes when nothing is manufactured in the US, then our rivers should clear up nicely and we will be able to drive our Jap cars to the river, use our Korean rods, and wear our Chinese clothes.

Hell no and it aint over now.......
