New to fly fishing. Help for Clinton/Califon/High Bridge area.

    Hi,
I'm going fly fishing for the first time for the day. I have a basic 5wt rod and a box of starter trout flies. I live in central Jersey so I was planning to only go as far as the Clinton/Califon/High Bridge area. I know of Ken Lockwood Gorge and was planning to try my my luck there.
    But...
Anyone know of some other locations around that area? Maybe a small brook or somewhere with less people so I don't embarrass myself? Also, what flies do you think would be my best bet for my first trout?

    Thanks

At this time of year, you want to be prepared for the possibility of anything.

But I'd recommend you go to Shannon's and ask what's working.

    They'll tell you.

good advice - shannons. recommend practice fishing in some local park ponds or lesser fished streams, like spruce run creek, mulhockaway creek, the ravine creek north of califon, sunfish and pickerel and perch are a little more forgiving to the learning curve as you go...you learn line control, and these fish are not as presentation conscious....if you feel you are comfortable on the stream ...go for it
