Flies don't matter. Just know where and at what depth in the river the trout are feeding and place your fly there. You'll catch a ton of fish. Remember, trout have an IQ of 6, they can't reason and they can't pass up anything that looks like food.

Re: spring is on its way

I have fished with the same vest now for almost 5 years it has 8 full size fly boxes in so I think I'm pretty prepared for any hatch that would present it's self. But for the early season my goto flies are pretty simple .

    Nymphs ; sizes 14-18
    Gold ribbed hares ear
    Bead head pheasant tail
    Bead head prince
    Olive triple tail

    Dry Flies
    Red quill 12-14
    Blue quill 12-14
    Olive Quill 12-14

As a suggestion since you are just starting, by a box of assorted flies that have the compartments labeled, this should help simplify things for you. For example Orvis sells a 70 Fly collection in a nice labeled box for $149. I am sure you can find others or even by a box and label it yourself. I remember being pretty confused by all the different names and sizes when I started. This way also lets you take a pretty quick inventory of your collection so you can easily see what you have and what you need. Where do you plan on fishing?

Hell no and it aint over now.......

Good idea there TT . Depending on the streams and rivers you are fishing some fly shops and tiers sell labeled selections for the time of year and streams you are fishing as well.
