    An early bass season

It's been hard to get into the swing of trout fishing as these pre-spawners have been extremely active since mid-April this year. They are from the upper Hudson and a trib. Most outings have been off the charts. Stripers arrived at the Troy Dam weeks early, too. I know most of this board is about coldwater, but, I thought I'd share in case there's other smallie addicts out there.

Justyn, Wooly buggers, Deceivers and Clousers sub-surface, and sliders and Gurglers up top. There are many patterns that will work for both large and smallmouth. I generally fish flies that are sizes 4 thru 3/0.
For a general pattern that works very well- a black weighted wooly bugger sz. 2 w/ some flash and rubber legs added.

I think the board is all fly fishing, but trout seem to dominate. And anyone who has never hooked into a smallie is missing something.

    Re: An early bass season

I hooked a largemouth yesterday on a small trout stream. I would never expect any bass there.
10 min later in the spot where I caught him a tree collapsed into the river due to the high wind. I was only few yards away from the action. Got really lucky this time.

Many men go fly fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
