Big Spinner,
Any reason for tying the big spinner on the Tru form hook without the bottom Post? In your opinion is their any benefit to leaving it off other than saving time? In your fly fisherman magazine article you suggested using a different model hook hence the question.

Re: 2010 Favorite Fly Swap(s)
Hi Art of Lee!!!
No real reason to leave off the post. IT is not needed, as these flies float like corks with all the zlon. I sometimes even rub some floatant into the trailing shuck. This hook makes the fly look cooler to me, not sure if the fish care. I like a 4x long streamer hook for the basic big spinner, although nearly any hook works well.
The other minor reason is that on big flies, I like a fly that is going to collapse in a fishes mouth and go in easily. I am convinced I sometimes miss a fish that did not get the big fly in its mouth because the still tails or something stuck on the outside of his mouth!
I tie this same spinner in many sizes. You use only three materials plus thread. The smaller ones go pretty quick, but the big ones use so much dubbing, they take some time.
I think that split tails, in addition to being a pain to tie, are one of the causes of a fly spinning your leader in a knot. If they are not balanced, the fly can spin.
I can tie this fly much faster and they work great. I did not tie any of the really big spinners I use, as they tend to scare people away and they do not fish them. Seriously, try these babies out, they really work.
The other anvantage is that you can see them!!! Even on the dark. I nkow for certain that the fly is going down the feeding lane. This can be important, especially during a heavy march brown or drake spinnerfall. The fish do not eed to move 2 inches left or right.
The other thing that helps this fly, is the small drop of superglue at the base of the wing. IT will keep the wing from folding down over the fly.

Re: 2010 Favorite Fly Swap(s)
Second from the bottom is mine. It is an emerging olive.
Hook: TMC R200 16
Thread: Rusty Brown 8/0
Tail and nymph case: Natural Pheasant Tail
Rib: Fine Copper Wire
Post: Z-lon
Parachute Hackle: Natural Dun
Thorax: Light Olive Superfine Dubbing
This is a great fly to fish early in the hatch. Fish it with only the front Frogs Fannied up, and let the tail part stay below the film.
Have a great week all,
brough
