    KLG Private Fall Stocking

Local fly fisherman, Mike Pennucci and others including Shannon’s Fly and Tackle are stocking the Ken Lockwood Gorge with 500 extra Brown Trout measuring between 8-10 inches in October. The goal is that these fish will hold over and provide a basis for a great Brown Trout fishery for 2010 and beyond. If you have any questions, please contact Mike at (908) 328-4968 for details. Sponsorship levels of $100 and $200.00 are important and Shannon’s will give a one time 10% discount off any purchase to the generous angler who agrees to be a sponsor.

    Such a deal.

    10% is such a good deal now-a-days.

    Donate $100, and save 10%.

So to earn that $100 back you will need to generously spend $900 at Shannon's.

    Such a deal.

that will help the fall fishing but only a few of the hatchery trout will make it to the spring.all the natural predators will make quick work of the easy meals you will provide them.

    Re: KLG Private Fall Stocking

I think there heart is in the right place but 500 fish is a negligable amount. Once you take into consideration mortality rates and preditation how many fish will actually be around to provide a better fishery in 2010 and into the future. The state during the old fall stockings used to load up the gorge with small fish and it never seemed to have to big of an affect on the overall quality of the fishery except during the fall when they put them in. What does a 100 or 200 dollar sponcership get people? A few more fish to catch in the fall. Wouldn't that money be better spent on stream improvements to help the wild fish population. A healthy wild fish population is the only way to improve a fishery into the future.

2008 fall fish were caught all over Jersey last winter and spring, and I'm sure a lot of them are still around the way this summer went.

True, but what you all don't know - and Jim is not going to toot his own horn - is that he does both stocking and stream work. I won't go into all of the specifics, but just on his helping NJ Green Acres and the South Branch Watershed Association preserve hundreds of acres of land along that river alone is more than 99.9% of the rest of the anglers do for conservation. Add generous support of gear for TU raffles which go directly to conservation, kids' fishing derbies, and on and on. And he does a lot more than just that

    Re: KLG Private Fall Stocking

    Trico Mike,
I hear you on the stream improvements. As for the fish, Mike stopped by to let me know that we had reached a level of sponsorship but that a little more was needed. That's when I (we at Shannon's) got involved. And, we have collected some donations and some sponsorships on Mike's behalf. 500 trout over 2.5 miles may not sound like a lot but they should have a pretty good shot at holding over. Water levels are good so habitat is available and the herons haven't had a great year because of all the water. Plus, they're Brown Trout so they should do just fine. As for the stream improvements, this came up at our last KLTU meeting. Right now the NJDEP is being pretty strict. There are certain organizations like TU and various watershed organizations that can move the paperwork to allow such projects to happen. Rusty Spinner, as TU's only full time employee in NJ is doing some great projects on the Musky and the upper SBR for example.
