The goal is that these fish will hold over and provide a basis for a great Brown Trout fishery for 2010 and beyond.

Some questions:

1) Since there already is an establish wild brown population in KLG, what, if any, impact will this additional competition for food during the coming winter months have on the wilds?

2) Since KLG is almost a de facto C&R section due to YRTCA regs already in place shouldn't it already be at almost max carrying capacity for the forage base? Especially if the state hasn't ceased stocking there with below legal harvestable limit fish? Shouldn't the spring stock of browns already be holding over?

3) Does the KLG really need the additional popularity that will accompany yet another publicized stocking?

4) What is the premise based on that the browns from this special stocking will hold over any better than the browns already being stocked by NJF&W?

I applaud the effort but I don't see how this is going to be more than a short term boost to the fish populations but I could be wrong.

I think everything will be fine at the Gorge. If you're concerned about the wild fish, I'd be opposed to stocking any big fish that WILL eat wild babies. By babies I mean...fish.

Your point on overstocking the Gorge is well taken. However, let's look at the numbers and species breakdown of an annual stocking by NJ Fish and Wildlife. Approximately 3600 fish are stocked in the spring with another 300 or so larger fish stocked in the fall, primarily Brook Trout. In the spring stocking, 1800 are 10-11 inch Brookies. What their holding capacity maybe is open to question but it certainly isn't very high in a normal year. That leaves the balance of the fish, mostly Rainbows who probably are caught more often then Browns. That's where hook mortality comes in. Even in the best managed western fisheries the hook mortality is 3-4% per catch and the trout are often caught more than once in a given year with Rainbows being caught several times as often as Browns. Add the Herons, mink, poachers and treble hooks and you have a much smaller percentage of holdover fish. The wild trout seem to be doing better than one might expect in what amounts to a suburban fishery with lots of hours of angler effort and limited regulation of season and fishing method.

If you read all the reply's from start to finish on this thread you've somehow managed to stock too little and too many fish at the same time. I for one have had a blast hooking and sometimes landing several large fish JH has put in the SBR including a few psychotic Kamloops Rainbows. Keep up the good work Jim ,as far as this dopey truck driver can tell your efforts are working.
