Mankind cannot fix the problem, that is why there is this refusal to believe it.

If nothing is different with the earth, then why do I have to wear sunscreen, when 40 years ago it was not even produced? Maybe it is a gloabal hoax manufactured for the beach industry to make more money?

    mac,

after a quick google search...you might want to rethink touting the oregon petition so highly. the paper circulated with the petition was neither peer reviewed or independendtly funded and many of the signatories (ones that have been confirmed to be real that is) have since recanted.

I dont need a scientist or the media to tell me the earth has changed. I have seen these changes in my lifetime. When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey, we would go outside for gym well into November and when you fell on the ground it was rock hard.(it was cold but this was before the pampering of children) By Thanksgiving the ground would be rock hard due to the frost and stay that way until March/April. Contractors would not start digging foundations until spring. Today, I see contractors make water line repairs and the frost sometimes is only a foot deep even in January. It varies from year to year. Sunscreen was not even a product when I was a boy and it was not needed. Sunglasses did not have a UVA or UVB rating. We have always had hurricanes and earthquakes throughout history, but not with the frequency with which we get them now. Skin cancers were not common as now. Global warming? Ozone depletion? I dont know, but there are definite changes taking place to the earth.

    no hoax, but...
...manufactured for the cosmetic industry to make money. 40 years ago my mom would yell at me to keep my shirt on (from under her beach umbrella). i don't believe it had anything to do w/ skin cancer. (i suspect they were still compiling that data.) it had everything to do w/ a whiny little irish kid turning hot pink and keeping his parents up all night. sunscreen is the new shirt.

The earth is constantly changing. So assume for the moment this is due to man made issues, the solution being proposed is a staggering transfer of wealth to developing nations none of whom want to make any changes on their own. In addition the proposal would have a centralized authority ( The U.N) oversee this transfer of wealth. In addition none of the scientists involved in the IPCC report can state with authority exactly how much of a reduction in CO2 needs to take place to have an impact. Finally the main solution to reduction of such gas is cap and trade. So when you see all these folks that show up to copenhagen in limos and jets you have to ask yourself how they plan to spend your money if they dont see fit to take a commercial flight to the very conference where they are supposed to come up with an overall agreement. Sorry folks this dog just aint gonna hunt.

Interestingly, our world will continue warming even if we drastically reduce CO2 outputs NOW due to heightened greenhouse effect. Although CO2 is a relatively small component of our atmosphere, anthropogenic CO2 is the main contributor to observed warming. Water vapor is the most abundant GHG and directly related to climate. And water vapor increases as the earth's atmosphere warms...

Presently, all we can do is slow the rate of change. The best ways to achieve GHG reductions are also the easiest and least costly -- but these would require lifestyle changes (examples: recycle/reduce/reuse, small cars & drive slower/less, turn lights 'OFF' when not in use, heat/cool our homes smartly, etc.) -- for most people, that simply ain't gonna happen.

Re: Global Warming a Hoax, don't worry you will still pay for it.

I leave for three weeks of training and all hell breaks out!

Man Made Global Warming is a HOAX! Hello, the fancy scientist guy already quit his job because he was fighting a losing battle.

Also why is there snow fall being recorded in every state this year? Must be all that global warming, or is it climate change now?

Not only that but the "global warming caused by man" lost a lot of steam with the hack of the Anglia emails.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

My argument is that the science, good or bad, is being used as an excuse to move money. Why are the 'pro' scientists arguing about the data? If they really believe in their theory shouldn't they have moved on to finding solutions, or at least found other scientist that can find solutions? Why is their solution to their problem getting me to agree that there is a problem? WHAT COMES NEXT?

So far the only solution is to try and involve other governments that want no part of this re-distribution of wealth (like China). Redistributing wealth is not fixing this problem (if there really is one). Kyoto didn't work. Copenhagen was a farce of massive proportions... The fact that we allow our current administration to contribute to it is incredibly embarrassing to me.

I suspect the 'pro' scientists may be receiving funding from foreign governments and private enterprise that want a positive result? Remember that private funding for undertakings like these is usually only found in the US these days. Some of these guys may be clinging to their theory because it justifies their $xxxM+ yearly funding.

Socialism was dead, or at least dying. The Chinese are embracing democracy and free trade, and it's turning them into a superpower. The wall has come down, and parts of the old USSR (Czech Republic?) are becoming the "go to" area for what used to be good union production jobs in the US. The 'new' Socialists/Liberals are now going GREEN. They are using what might very well be good data from a few superior scientists as an excuse to further their agenda. As long as the politicians try to use this data and results to further extreme liberal ideas (re-distribution of global wealth) I will continue to question it! They are giving me no choice.

(Wow. After re-reading that paragraph I think I might just need to ask RyanR for a(n?) NRA application. I scare myself sometimes.)

The point is: you can't rely upon anything generated by news agencies. There's usually an element of truth, a fistful of spin, and a heaping serving of bias...you've heard of editors, program directors, and producers, right? Surely you know the difference between scientists and non-scientists (maybe not). The other point is you're never really sure who you're arguing with here in these forums - NOBODY here knows me, including you. I'm just a lurker.

If the atmospheric specialists can't agree that the data is good, and argue that the methodology and results are skewed, what chance do I have of filtering out all the smoke? I have to rely on news sources to report weaknesses found by other climate scientists, and then go and try to verify the finding.

And I'll argue a point on this subject with anyone (even MACFLY).

I don't know you. Are you part of the Green Police?
No, seriously. Do you fish, or did you just stop in because this forum popped up in Google under Global Warming? Either way it's been an interesting thread.

To be fair, you, mbwmn, seem to take more interest in this subject than most - and for that reason alone, I commend you. Still don't care for some of the rude remarks directed at me (i.e., MACFLY) - but hey, MACFLY knows everything! Go get 'em, Mr. MACFLY I Read This Recent Article in US News & World Report! I suspect he's close to solving the world's problems and I definitely don't want to slow the big guy down.

Well, MACFLY seems to do ok defending himself. I don't think he needs my help here. And I'm not sure who started the name-calling... He does make some pretty strong arguments though.

I often let my passion for personal freedom and my campaign against stupidity in government get the best of me.

Again: "good fishin" and take care.

And, pls don't let my right-wing tirade in this forum stop you from contributing in the rest of the forum. We (you, me, and MACFLY) are bound to find some common ground there.

hehe...Green Police? Hell no! (and not an activist, nor an Al Gore fan)

Been looking at the NJ forum for years, but never inspired to contribute anything. You guys were already going back and forth and I couldn't resist adding my own two cents.

Sure, you could say I fish...thanx to dad, been tying my own since college and pursuing NJ wild trout for as long as I can remember. Can't think of anything better than casting a #12 or #14 Ausable Wulff (copied from Fran Betters) on a mid-summer afternoon in the hemlock grove at Van Campens, or the West Branch in upstate NY.

Let me know when you run for a government office.

    Agreed: interesting thread.
