    Re: Ramapo River 2007

Hey Pete I finally took your advice. I fished/scouted the ramapo from rt 17 all the way to west oakland ave. Everything from rt 17 to glen gray rd was muddy and the water was much deeper than need be.

I didn't get a single bite I was just scouting the area more than anything. I didn't bother going to any part of the river by scarlet oak pond/ As you could imagine there were plenty of cars in the lot.

I fished about 6 spots on the ramapo I didn't get a single bite, but again i was really only scouting the area to know good places to fish under better conditions.

I also scouted/fished Pascack Creek, Hackensack River, and Tenakill Creek.

    Total time 8am to 2pm
    Nothing caught No bites

Ramapo River at Lakeshore Drive 10/21/07, 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
    • Water: 62 F, Slightly Turbid, Moderate Flow 105-->102 CFS
      Weather: Sunny, Calm, 58-->66 F
      Hatch: A few tiny midges
      Catch: One small LM Bass
Sucessful Flys: #12 Browm/Pheasant Wooly Bugger
The area was pretty crowed when I got there, 2 fly guys in the pool, one in the rapids.... No spin or bait guys for a change.

I started in the upsteam riffle, and moved down to the pool after the others moved on, the bass was in the pool near the mouth of the brook.

I saw the guy in the rapids get one (probably a rainbow). As far as I could tell, no one else caught any trout while I was there.

Ramapo River at Lakeshore Drive 11/04/07, 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM
    • Water: 56 F, Clear, Low Flow 73 CFS
Weather: Mostly Sunny, Breezy, 54 F
      Hatch: A few tiny midges
      Catch:
      Sucessful Flys: N/A
Another fly guy was also skunked. A local spin guy was just sitting there drinking beer and watching.

I had the pleasure of meeting GARYB when he stopped by. I chatted with him and the local spin guy for so long, that I didn't leave until over an hour after I stopped fishing.

Gary reported similar results at the Glen Gray area.

Is it me or does the Ramapo seem to drop faster every year after a good rain? Just a week ago it was pushing 800 cfs and now its down to 73 cfs.

I've been speculating that the relatively short rain events, simply weren't sufficient to recharge the groundwater....

To a lesser extent the recently completed "flood control project" may be hastening the disposal of runoff. The river has been chanalized between the Oakland ballfield, and Pompton Lake. Floodgates are operating at the Pompton Dam.

Look at the Pompton Guage for Oct 27 -28. I wasn't watching, but I presume that the crazy flow pattern was due to the operation of the floodgates.

Met up with evil stepson for some flycasting lessons. The old Shakespeare Sigma 6 wt rod, that I gave him 24 years ago, was used for the first time.
He seemed to pick up the basics just by watching. He needs to work on keeping falsecasts from hitting the water. Pick-ups are a bit splashy. In spite of some gusty winds...No windknots or tangles.

I had one hit while I was fooling around with the thermometer. It wasn't on long enough to determine species or estimate size.
    Otherwise we were both .

Decided to try for some of those TU fish that were stocked near, Glen Gray Road, last week-end.

I lost a nice brown at Minks Pool. After he got off the dropper fly (a hare's ear) was missing. It wasn't that huge, I must have tied a bad knot.

There were so many leaves in the water that it difficult to complete a cast without snagging one.

When I arrived, I was the only one there. When I left there were two other vehicles in the parking area.

    Nature Boy stuff:
When I was heading upstream between Minks Pool and Cindy's Pool, I startled a flock of wild turkeys. I counted 13, there may have been more.
I Also saw the huge Heron who ate all the trout.

I lost one shortly after I arrived, (probably a Rainbow).

No other fishers in sight, no other fish stories to report.

    Gary:
Were any of the Browns unusually Large?

The fellow we were talking to Sunday, told a phish story about a 6 lb brown caught upstream from the Lenape Lane bridge on a worm yesterday. (Today he got a sucker in the same spot, also on a worm).

I don't believe that TU stocked that area, but a few fish could have wandered downstream a bit since the week-end.

    Ramapo River 11-18-07

    Air temp. 43 H20 =57?
Cold morning with some light flurry on/off. Pete, thanks for advice on using wooley buggers. Olive worked on a nice brookie about 16 inches that snapped my tippet as I was about to net him. Had four good looks at him..beautiful fish. 2nd fish was a rainbow about 15 inches good weight taken on a large streamer olive colored. What a nice day. Left after my feet were frozen.
