    Re: rotary or not?

I gave in to the hype and bought a Griffin Montana Mongoose. I don't particularly like rotary tying and only use the rotary function to check the back side of the fly. If I had it to do over, I would have bought a more traditional vise such as the HMH Standard. I've dropped hints and am hoping my wife or daughter will get me one for Christmas.

    Re: rotary or not?

I constantly use the rotary on my vise for ribbing, palmering, and anything else for which I can use it.....even just checking the other side. Wouldn't have a vise that was not a rotary. (Mine is a Dyna King Trekker).

I have a 50 year old Thompson A vice and love it. I can tie big streamers and size 28 Dry Flies with no problem. It is not the vice. It is how skilled you are at tying.

    Re: rotary or not?

    i'm going to vote:

    e) i have a rotary vise but i dont always tie rotary

i've been tying on a renzetti traveler ever since renzetti put them in fly shops.

rotary tying was all the rage and i bought one.

after 20+ years of tying on it, i seem to have stopped using the rotary function and just tie stationary, sometimes spinning a few difficult materials.

    tomfly said it best:

It is not the vice. It is how skilled you are at tying.
