A few years ago, Striperman (Mark Celebuski) gave me a great homemade fly tied to imitate a stunned alewife. It has a foam body and is neutral weighted, so it suspends and flutters like a half-dead fish. Been dying to try it out. This Friday sounds like my chance. Not a tier myself, but if it catches fish, I'll post a photo of it so people can tie imitations.

Is that how you fish sulphur emergers? Would probably work for them as well. And Hendrickson duns. And March Browns.

Sheeit. Why do we fish with artificials at all?

Lightenup - if you tie an extra McNugget that you brought home from work to a bait hook, you could definitely turn it over with a 6-weight. Just saying. Add a couple of jungle cock feathers for um.. realism. You'd catch more fish.

Re: The Flood that won't End!

    Hi,

River finally looking like a river again. Well back within its banks, but not yet wadeable.

A few boats floating by the house and a couple appeared to be targeting the occasional riser!!!

Still lots of alewives around, the fish are literally stuffed to the gills with alewives.

I wonder if anyone has tried a crippled floating alewife pattern? Or does anyone even have one to try?

    Jim

Re: The Flood that won't End!

NYC DEP ran a crazy test of their valve system today. Dropped the WB release from 1500 to ZERO for a few hours. Stilesville dropped to about 130 cfs for a couple of hours and Hale Eddy down to 400. There was still a bit of spill and stream flow to keep the river relatively wet. Just not sure why this was not scheduled last week when the spill of 500-800 would have kept the river in better condition.

This is a test they run annually, but other years it was not as noticeable. Last year the release was only 125 when they dropped it to zero and Stilesville dropped from 125 to 90.

The thing that gets me the most upset is that DEP notified the decree parties and the DRBC and others, but not the fishing community. They either felt empowered that it was not needed to let us know or the old adage that it is better to ask forgiveness than permission.

A few bugs in the air today, but I have not seen a mayfly.

    Hey Mud,

Not sure how I missed your post about the alewife imitation. Sounds like what I was thinking about.

Let us know how you do.

Hey Jim, yep, around here, my name is Mud.

But you can call me mike. (kate and felix say hi)

I didn't end up going up last weekend. Too much work. Heading up Friday though, if all goes well. Might miss the alewives, but that won't stop me from throwing this fly Steve gave me.

(Given how much better white streamers are than any other color up there, it seems like the trout are keyed on alewives or similar bait fish all the time. I've always suspected they have a taste for baby shad, which are in the river more often than alewives, but that's just speculation.)

anyway, a full report will be forthcoming whenever I finally hit the water up there.

If flows aren't wadeable up there by early next week when I take my big 17th annual trip to the WB, I'm going to have to blame some on here......

River still ripping. The WB over 3500 cfs.

The good news is boats floating by have reported lots of bugs and pretty good fishing.

Can't wait to hear Rusty tell us about his great week of fishing.
