    Re: New reel

I have Ross Evolution 1.5, 1, and 0. I've used them for years. I also have the Hatch 2 Plus which I bought about a year ago to use on a 3 wt. Both the Ross and Hatch work great. The Hatch is a bit more upscale, but I've never had a problem with any of the Ross Evolution reels. It's very easy to remove the spools from both the Ross and the Hatch, unlike my Lamson (also a great reel) which gives me fits (mainly because I'm mechanically inept).

awesome thanks for the help. the review i read about the start up inertia was from trident.com. an that was the only one that said anything about that which i thought was very strange being a highly rated company.. silly

    Re: New reel

Start up inertia? How heavy is the spool? I'm not buying it. Start friction can be an issue, but inertia?

Now that I have that engineering rant out of the way, I think almost anything will suit you fine. What about the Ross Gunnison? Maybe a little heavy (but is it too heavy?), however, that reel is a reliable workhorse for a lifetime.

In general, I go for click pawl reels for 4 wt. No need for a drag that adds a little weight. Plenty of choices out there, Orvis Battenkill, new Medalist or Cabelas CGR for a retro look. Sage Click or Galvan brookie for a more modern look. Plenty of other options.

Lamson reels may fit you as well.

    Re: New reel

I picked up an orvis mirage LA II for like $150 two weeks ago. The website had them on sale, but none available when I went to order. So I called and they checked retail stores. Found a few hanging around and gave me the number to call. I called and painlessly got a $450 reel for $150 with backing shipped to me in two days. Not sure if your still looking, but couldn't hurt giving them a call.

Its a beautiful reel. I know its not made in the US (the current one now is), but you cannot beat that price for such a nice reel.

I really like the nautilus reels . Same price range you're looking at.

Hatch Finatic 1 Plus or 2 Plus.
