I'd like to get some opinions on personal preference when it comes to selecting curved hooks. Take for example the Dai-Riki #125 and #135.
The #125 has a straight eye and is 2X short.
The #135 has a turned down eye and is 1X short.
The #125's use is labeled as being for emerger/nymph/caddis patterns
The #135's use is labeled as being for scuds/caddis pupa/larva
For caddis larva patterns, would you use these interchangeably?
Is there any reason you would choose one hook over the other?
If so, then for what type of pattern?
I know that most people don't use Dai-Rikis but just assume you had no other choice.
I had a Catskill caddis larva recipe that called for a #125 but I ended up using a #135 because that's all I had. It was a simple pattern. I tied in on a size 12 hook. Started with a gun-metal plastic bead (closest thing I had to brown), dubbed on some light olive ice dub for the body then dubbed a thorax with a darker peacock ice dub for some contrast. |
