| The "Offender" OK guys, here it is.....my take on serotonins big ole bugger. The pic of it is here http://www.njflyfishing.com/photopos...php?photo=2809 For my version of this fly, I used 2 size 10 2x streamer hooks with 10lb fluoro to attach the stinger to the main hook. 1. Fly Tier and Serotonin have given their methods on tying the fluoro/wire to the stinger, but I prefer Sero's method of using a clinch knot. I feel it keeps the hook more inline with the rest of the fly(this is important for my modification of the fly which will soon be explained) Both methods are here http://www.njflyfishing.com/vBulleti...ead.php?t=3880 (Stinger / Tandem / Trailing Hook with Wire) 2. Once the length of fluoro is tied on, I begin applying a thread base to the stinger(red 6/0 thread) and then tie in a tail(still on the stinger) using black marabou so it sticks out about an inch past the bend of the hook. Then take 4 or 5 strands of pearl flashabou and tie it in on top of the hook so it sits on top of the marabou. Cut it so about half an inch of flashabou sticks out past the tail. At this point you can also add some lead wire to the stinger if you REALLY need to get down deep. When this fly sinks, the clinch knot keeps the back end inline and when it's being stripped it creates a nice right to left undulating motion I tie a tail on the stinger because I couldn't find black marabou long enough to extend off of the main hook the length I wanted to(at least not without having a thick part of the marabou stem bending it in one particular direction after it was tied in) 3. Once this is done, you can take the stinger out of the vice and begin applying a thread base to the main hook(same thread and don't forget about the conehead). When the thread is on tie in the fluoro to the top of the hook shank and coat with some zap-a-gap. 4. Now you just tie the rest like a wooly bugger with one change....take those 4 or 5 strands of pearl flashabou and tie those on top of the tail on the main hook, and trim to the same length as those on the stinger. For the body I used peach estaz with hackle dyed hot orange and lead wire if more weight is desired(be sure to leave a space the length of the conehead immediately after the conehead). Once your body is tied off, keep wrapping the thread until you create a head that is flush with the widest part of the conehead. For those out there that may not like using 2 hooks you can simply clip the hook off of the main hook so that you're only using 1 hook. The only reason I used the stinger was to lengthen the whole fly to my desired specifications. FYI, both fish landed last week on this fly were hooked on the stinger. I think the flashabou definitely added to this flies productivity this weekend with the water being a little dirty and running high. Anybody else have success with big buggers like this? |
